Theatre Du Verdure, France 10.27.1985

Late in 1985, Prince broke his self-imposed silence and spoke to the public for the first time in almost four years. First came an interview for Rolling Stone magazine. Later came an interview for MTV. Prince's agreement to be interviewed took MTV so suddenly that the staff at the cable network were unable to arrange to conduct the interview in person. Consequently, the Music News staff resorted to simply providing a list of questions to be read to Prince by his manager and answered by Prince on videotape. MTV elected to broadcast only parts of the interview. The full interview was then offered to other broadcasters.

The videotaped interview was conducted in France, where Prince was shooting his forthcoming motion picture, Under the Cherry Moon. He first took a break to film the video for America, the third single from the Around the World in a Day LP, before 2,000 kids at the Theatre de la Verdure (translation: Greenery Theatre), which is a huge tent on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Once the video shoot was completed, Prince & the Revolution treated the audience to a 90-minute concert. Afterwards, Prince sat with a few of the young people in attendance and answered the questions prepared by the MTV Music News staff. It marked the first time in his career that Prince had said more than two sentences on TV. Unfortunately, in many cases, he didn't answer the questions posed, as you'll see. Although Prince is very good at many things, his inexperience with interviews shows greatly.

The first and most obvious question is, why have you decided to drop your media guard with the recent Rolling Stone interview and this one for MTV? And why were you so secretive prior to this?

Well, as you can see, I've made a lot of friends here, but I was homesick and I missed America. I guess I just wanted to talk to somebody.

Someone in Minneapolis recently told us that several months ago they were in a studio there when David Rifkin, your sound engineer, walked in. They asked him what he thought of the new Prince album, Around The World In A Day. He said, "It's great, but wait 'til you hear the new album." Apparently, he meant you're already working on a new LP, and that this one would be a strong return to your funk roots. Is this true? Can you elaborate? What will it be called? When will it be due out, and what's the music like?

Don't you like surprises? Guess not. Ah, it is true I record very fast. It goes even quicker now that the girls help me -- the girls, meaning Wendy and Lisa. I don't really think I left my funk roots anywhere along the line. Around The World In A Day is a funky album. Live it's even funkier.

Would you ever like to direct your own movie?

Yes, (very enthusiastically) yes, yes.

Speaking of movies, tell us as much as you can about Under The Cherry Moon.

What's the plot, what kind of characters, what kind of music, how many songs, what can we expect?

It's a French film. It's a black-and-white French film, and ah, she's in it (girlish giggles can be heard). And her name's Emanuelle.

Those were the circumstances that were more intriguing to me, because it was matter of us trying to get into each other's heads. He had that relationship with other people, Sheila E particularly and of course Wendy and Lisa. From a conceptual basis, Wendy and Lisa were the two musicians in any of his bands who were able to tap into him on some subliminal level - they really did have a musical relationship that was closer than with anyone that he worked with.

My relationship was a little bit more from a player's standpoint. Because of the tremendous drummer and percussionist that Sheila is, [it meant] that relationship was very important. Some of the more interesting and more enjoyable music from my point of view was when Sheila, Prince, Wendy and Lisa and I would just go into the studio and just jam. I've got quite a few tapes of sessions like that. Purely ad lib, instrumental sessions, where we'd go in and just make a lot of music. None of it was going to get released; it was for our own enjoyment. Wendy and Lisa don't really come from a jazz background [but] they shared in the ability to be very spontaneous. Our ability to go in and spontaneously play some music and at the end of an hour come out with some music that at least we could say has some kind of musical validity and continuity. It may not have the harmonic sophistication of a straight-up jazz band, but the ethic was very similar. When Prince wanted to be spontaneous, he could be very spontaneous!

Prince gets together with Eric Leeds, Sheila E. and Levi Seacer Jr. to jam at Sunset Sound.
The quartet recorded a highly spontaneous "Paisley Jam" session. Eric played saxophone, Sheila drums, Levi bass, while Prince alternated between guitar and piano. Eight instrumentals were committed to tape:

They were given titles simply to facilitate their identification. Accordingly "Madrid" was named so because it had a kind of Spanish feel, while "Mobile" (referring to Mobile, Alabama) was a bluesy piece. Similarly "12 Keys" featured mmany key changes (the song incorporates a portion of the melody of "The Question Of U"). Eric went into the studio the next day to record saxophone and flute over dubs on some of the "Paisley Jam" tracks.

30 December 1985
Fired up by the results of the "Paisley Jam", Prince is back in the Sunset Sound studio with Eric, Sheila and Levi. They recorded "U Gotta Shake Something", "Voodoo Who" and "Finest Whisky" during another highly relaxed session. By now, Prince was beginning to realise that the music they were creating was highly exciting and perhaps worthy of release.

5 January 1986
Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin and her brother Jonathan, join the line-up of Prince, Eric, Sheila and Levi in the Sunset Sound studio for an exhausting seven-hour session, the so-called "Everybody's Jam". Six of the pieces hat were recorded were given titles:

During this session, Prince played primarily drums, while Sheila and Jonathan played percussion, Lisa piano and Wendy guitar and bass.

An album is assembled from the instrumental sessions held in late Dec. 1985 and early Jan. 1986. Around 20 minutes of the 45 minute "Junk Music" was going to make up side one of the LP, while "Up From Below", "Y'all Want Some More?" and "A Couple Of Miles" were planned for side two of the LP. No test pressing of The Flesh LP was ever made, however, and the album was shelved when Under The Cherry Moon and other activities demanded Prince's full attention.

Featuring largely improvisional music, the Flesh sessions allowed Prince to stretch out musically and develop his musical vocabulary. The Flesh can be seen as a forerunner to Prince's later Madhouse project in more wanys than one.
Much like Madhouse, the musical focus of The Flesh was on instrumental music, basically funk jams with a distrinct jazz flavour added by Eric Leeds, who was given the opportunity to contribute more actively to Prince's music. And much like Madhouse the plan was ro release The Flesh album "anonymously" with few details about the participants and certainly no mention of Prince's involvement.

The Flesh instrumentals remain unreleased, although part of the melody for "Madrid" was later re-used by Eric for "Andorra" on his 1991 Times Squared album. Additionally, some 30 seconds of "Junk Music" made it into Under The Cherrymoon as background music (in the scene where Tricky and Christopher are arguing over what type of man Mary Sharon prefers).

Further Sunset Sound sessions in January included work on several tracks for Jill Jones' album. Before leaving for L.A. in late January, Prince taped 2 songs for Dream Factory, "Last Heart" and "It's A Wonderful Day".

Initial tracking took place on 20 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA

Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA. The lyrics of this original version mention several personal details of changes in Prince's band and his relationships with bandmembers and staff.

The song (without orchestration) was included as the eighth track on a 1 May, 1985 configuration of Parade (and would therefore have been credited to Prince and the Revolution), but was removed before the album's release.

Old Friends 4 Sale
This slow bluesy classic is one of Prince's most autobiographical songs in which he sings about Steve Fargnoli, Wendy Melvoin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. A somber mood is established from an eerie slightly discordant synth with a piano the main accompaniment. Recorded during the Parade sessions, two versions exist, with one including Clare Fischer's orchestra. It was revised in 1991.

The song "Old Friends 4 Sale" was written in 1985
and was featured in Prince's movie "Under The Cherry Moon" but not included on the soundtrack "Parade".

Prince is fiddling with the tape deck inside the T-Bird.
On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale,"
an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss.
Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block --
the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix."
"Old Friends 4 Sale" ends,
and on comes "Strange Relationships," and as-yet-unreleased dance tune.
"Is it too much?" asks Prince about playing his own songs in his own car.
"Not long ago I was driving around L.A. with [a well-known rock star], and all he did was play his own stuff over and over. If it gets too much, just tell me."

An ignition turns. "Wait," calls Prince, remembering something. He grabs a tape off the T-Bird seat and yells to his father, "I got something for you to listen to. Lisa [Coleman] and Wendy [Melvoin] have been working on these in L.A." Prince throws the tape, which the two female members of his band have mixed, and his father catches it with one hand. Nelson nods okay and pulls his car behind his son's in the alley. Closely tailing Prince through North Minneapolis, he waves and smiles whenever we look back. It's impossible to believe that the gun-toting geezer in Purple Rain was modeled after John Nelson.

‘It’s the clearest definition of creative freedom I have ever heard. I was 16 and went to see the film Under The Cherry Moon and fell in love. The soundtrack went from rock to computerized blues to jazz to pop and classical. I grew up listening to jazz and blues, to Ella Fitzgerald and Hendrix and, sure, I loved Bach and Mozart. But prince came along and amalgamated them all. The writing was so descriptive and colourful. I used to stay up and listen to the album over and over again on headphones. When everyone else was outside playing and running on a Saturday afternoon, I’d be locked in my bedroom or sat on my porch listening to the LP, and I’d be immediately transported away from all the problems in my neighbourhood to the French Riviera, where the film was set.

Prince uses so many different vocal tones and that was a real beginning for me. His voice would change to accommodate the story, the lyrics – something I choose to do with my music. Any poet, singer, writer wants to live in the moment of each and every song and this is the method by which to do it. He switches Anotherloverholenyohead to a song like Do U Lie (sings), ‘When I lie awake at night in my boudoir’ and automatically the sun comes out, the rays shine through the window, the room becomes light. The track Christopher Tracey’s Parade taught me a new sense of rhythm. Using a computer he created a different heart rhythm. You don’t listen to that song, you fall inside it and become it. He added car sounds – I mean, who did that in those days? And he sings like he never planned a thing, like they play the music and he’s not sure how it’s going to go he just opens his mouth and starts to sing. It doesn’t feel rehearsed but fresh, full of life.

It’s a classic album and lyrically an inspiration. He’s capable of being a very personal writer but he’s also very skilled. When you listen to the music the picture is always clear, the imagination is provoked – that’s the kind of writer I want to be. Like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, he makes forever music.

The instrumentation is wonderful. He had a computer create the sound but didn’t falsify it by pretending it’s another instrument. He chose to play a computer as itself! His guitar – how he would go from being rock and out there and strong and immediately change the sound to sensitive and loving and soft – that is brilliance. I don’t know if the music was a genuine reflection of a part of his life or a fictional creation, but quite honestly I don’t care because I feel it regardless. I feel blessed just listening to this record.’ -Jill Scott

Initial tracking of the track (as Wendy's Parade) took place on 17 April 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with Prince recording the drum track in sequence of Wendy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U and Under The Cherry Moon, all in one take. He then layered other instruments over all four tracks.
