He (Steve Parke) also recounts the time Prince invited him to watch a montage of old performances he was preparing for the American Music Awards. When a scene from Purple Rain appeared, the star bellowed, "Look at that wig!" and burst out laughing.

Parke later asked Prince's hair stylist Earl Jones about the comment. He explained the star had had to reshoot a few scenes after the filming wrapped - but he had already cut his hair and bleached it blond - necessitating the bouffant hairpiece.

Jones added that Prince had reacted so badly to the bleach that his hair started breaking off, so he had to let it grow out, and dye it back to black.

"The hairstyle in Raspberry Beret was literally all I could do with it."

Filming had to finish either in late 1983, or early 1984, to give time for editing, etc. The film came out June 1984, so reshoots would have happened before that point. He had long hair when the film came out, because we saw it in the Warehouse rehearsal for the birthday gig June 7, 1984. Tour went on after that.

Then the tour went through the first of April 1985. ATWIAD dropped about 3 weeks later. Where he cut his hair short would have to be after Apri 7, 1985 (last tour date). He was also filming UTCM by the summer of 1985, and filmed "America". Hair was short, so - when was this wig action happening? I don't buy it.

It seems Steve Parks is talking about performances of Purple Rain, not the Purple Rain movie

Earl Jones is saying this happened somewhere in March April of course -before the Raspberry Beret video shoot.

I'm sorry, but that must have looked strange--and it's probably for the best that it didn't work out and he had to dye it back. But yeah, I can't figure out the timeline for this, either.

Though I got to say, Prince was right about the Hulk-hair.

Raspberry beret video wasn't filmed until June. Syracuse was March 30th and it doesn't look like a wig at that concert. There's no television performances that I know of in the months after that...

edit: oh actually 4 the Tears in Your Eyes was shot in April so he clearly cut his hair immediately after the Purple Rain tour.....

If they're talking about Purple Rain there that would have happened in early 1984 which seems unlikely. I would guess that they're talking about the Raspberry Beret video and he had to reshoot a few scenes for that but had already cut and bleached his hair because he hated it? So he had to wear a wig of a hairstyle he hated

Someone has confused their story anyway because that doesn't explain why he had the Raspberry Beret hairstyle in the first place

if he had to reshoot scenes with a wig, how come his hair looked exactly the same throughout the entire tour?

also, didn't kim berry say she was the one to cut it? but I thought kim wasn't with him until long after purple rain.

Parke must have the story wrong. Maybe he cut it toward the end of the tour because there is a blonde guy on the front cover of ATWIAD. Remember Kim Berry said he would get these ideas and sometimes screw up his hair.

ya, and i just rewatchd a kim berry interview, they, meaning the news station misinterpreted her, they said she cut his hair at the end of the purple rain tour but she wasn't with him until around 90. she was probably talking about cutting his hair after the graffiti bridge period. he'd alternate between long and short.

I guess this explains why Prince has blonde hair on the cover of ATWIAD?

You can see this short haircut in the 4 the Tears in Your Eyes video, shot in April 1985.

It still doesn't explain what "reshoots" refers to though
