Appreciation Thread: “Lovesexy” While Prince’s religious beliefs were a mystery to most, “Lovesexy” is six relentless minutes of pure joy that even an atheist could catch the Spirit to. The Black Album’s sinister brand of funk found Prince throwing himself against the padded walls of his psyche, but Lovesexy seems as if his soul burst out of Spooky Electric’s straitjacket, running wild with extended sleeves and flying buckles. “This feeling’s so good in every single way / I want it morning, noon, and night of every day / And if, by chance, I cannot have it—I can’t say / But with it, I know Heaven’s just a kiss away.” The airy melodic top (pulsing organs, glossy horns, and nectar-sweet vocals) combined with a dense, aggressive bottom (crisp Linn-Drum snares, meaty guitar riffs, and thumping bass) result in a trippy delight that’ll shake your core with holy thunder.

4 a very long time I said that Lovesexy is a track that combines everything what Prince is about...besides the hits! I mean it has a great groove, bass, guitar and horns with changes in harmony and those typical high/low voices.
2 busy to be a single or hit, but I sure would have loved that he used this groove/song 4 a more cmmercial song and single edit. Love4oneanother

I had a geek out moment in Minneapolis last month. Got to speak with Eric Leeds at the Eletric Fetus, Susannah's Dream Factory Art release appearance, and I told him: every time his horn part kicks in...after 29 years, still socks me in the chest and knocks me outta my seat!!! Well, yeah, I guess if you're rehearsing for five months, you may lose your sense of enjoyment... It all sounds very glamorous to fans... Being in a superstar's band, doing tours, getting applause, but I'm sure it was very tiring... A big hand for the Girls and Boys in the band!

An apology to Supafunky/the Lovesexy faithful: Let me explain… SupafunkyOrgangrinderSexy has always said Lovesexy saved his life. For good reason that he has explained…Lovesexy was there for him through sexuality, drama, etc…life issues. He said he found a way to live because of the inspiration Lovesexy gave to him...this is a well known statement. I remember in my momma amp days folks clowned the “lovesexy saved me life” statements form some etc. Hell even I was thought it was kind of odd...kind of. Especially since I never appreciated Lovesexy for what it was until a decade later. Well here it comes up again on Org v2.0 and in a thread… I called Lovesexy fake and Supa said “you say fake, I say Salvation!”..I was like “whaaa? LOL!”… others have also haile d lovesexy as someting that got them through troubled times Well here I sit in my lonely room...lookin’ for my sunshine The recent 1999 birthday..1999 is legal now..21 ya know…had me thinking (yeah it hurt): I know erry note like my dick knows the palm of my hand…I can’t say enough about the album, the innovation, the inspiration etc. I even went as far as simply copying and pasting my old comments because I’ve spent my whole damn net life praising –hailing it (hi Nu lol) and can’t come up with hardly anymore to say about it. My love has been professed more than enough… I gave it a 4 million dollar diamond ring and it wasn’t because I fucked another cd in Colorado either. Seems like some found in Lovesexy, what I had found a few years earlier in 1999. Supa and others said they found salvation so to speak in Lovesexy...I found a lot or just as much in 1999 as well...and never knew it…well I did but I never consciously said it to myself...I’ve thought it yes.. 1999 was my coming out in music so to speak. It is what got me into music almost...sure I had Monster Mash on 45’ and others etc but 1999 brought me into the record stores and appreciating other thangs. It also caused me my low attention span on the radio by becoming a radio dial flipper...flipping channels to find any station playing Prince since 1999 was the one that made him grand and ubiquitous..dang u 1999! Hehe It also made me compare..I was like ..DD isn’t like Prince...uh uh…O’bryan is sort of like it but aint it…oh this new Stones is the jam but it aint 1999 or Prince etc...but it got me into listening to other music ..I mean actually “listening” and giving me a focus so to speak...a focus, a hobby, inspiration, joy, hope etc…all the things Supa said Lovesexy brought to him...just in different ways and for different reasons but ultimately the same funkay thang in the end… So I apologize to Supa and others for laughing at his/their …”faith”..in Lovesexy...I still have my qualms with Lovesexy but so what. We all get in where we can fit in and some cd’s fuck you better than others...it all depends on the music and the person. There is no one size fits all condom. 1999 popped my cherry (even though I had been taken with the Controversy 45 and I Wanna be Your Lover ). And I married 1999 so we can bareback or missionary or whatever with no qualms..and others can to Lovesexy because they married Lovesexy..he said salvation..1999 was mine in retrospect..so I officially apologize to Supa and to Lovesexy for not realizing each person has their own religion and faith. All n all an apology to those who hail Lovesexy. Prince did this.

Definitely one of the top 5 for me. Every song is killer, even the corny ones (Glam Slam, Dance On). The religious themes don't bother me, though I don't agree with any of them, but I don't have a problem singing any parts of Anna Stesia. . To me, it's kind of like a view into the other side of the coin. He'd been in the sexy gutters for years and this was a chance for his religious side to take the center stage. . A lot of his stuff from 87-90 was hit or miss. In particular, most of his production and arrangement stuff in 87-88 is just not something I enjoy. But everything on Lovesexy hits the right notes.

The song Lovesexy itself is such a beautiful mess. "Climb in my fur."

I totally agree with what you all said. And want to add;
I knew his songs at that time from the radio and so on. But, Lovesexy was my first Prince album I bought myself (and it was my 2nd or 3rd CD overall...). And when I listened to it, it was like an explosion in my head, it was like an musically orgasm which pulsated through the sensory organs, emotions and body.
In my eyes, the album is one of the top masterpieces of P, with the song Lovesexy itself as one of the most princiest songs overall...

Well, its to be expected since he kind of rips his own 1999 riff....or the Sussudio riff..or wait...who's on first? "Climb in my fur."

Could "Lovesexy" be the least performed title track ever? I can't think of one he's done fewer times other than maybe "Come" or "Graffiti Bridge"?
Edit: Or, I guess, "Rave" [Edited 5/8/17 19:59pm]

Graffiti Bridge, Crystal Ball and The Truth were never played live. Planet Earth and 3121 a few times in 2007... He played Gold during The Ultimate Live Experience in 1995, but that lasted only a month. He revived it in 2011-12. Emancipation... Once on TV, but never on a tour... [Edited 5/9/17 9:43am]

2nd favorite all-time Prince album...1st thing I played on the day that he died...never cared for "Dance On" but I respect it in the overall flow of the album...maybe it's just me, but "Positivity" has aged (in a wierd way) well as a song and an album-closer over the years...

I happen to be listening to the song "Lovesexy" right now, and I saw this thread, so of course I had to comment. It's a great upbeat song with lovely horn arrangemens. "Lovesexy" is my second favourite song on the album, Anna Stesia being my favourite. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

Listening to "Lovesexy" again, I believe the album is a continuation of the "psychedelic" notions of "ATWIAD" + "Parade". It's a very colorful album...& only one that P could create. Definitely a complete thought. One of the greatest.... [Edited 5/10/17 5:04am] Exiles of the Nation
