Scottie Baldwin: Prince had hip issues in 2004 . In the podcast, at 2:00 onward, Scottie talks about how Prince's health affected Musicology at "the height of his hip issues". . Lots of all kinds. Maybe we should just have 3 threads that go on for years, have 15,000 posts and because they really are not threaded, consist of posts that quote 10 other posts and are half a page long ... With half of the replies at the top and the rest at the bottom? . Music Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Yes, there were rumors in the late 90s. In the new years eve Rave concert, he made a point of doing a bunch of splits, not as part of dancing to a song, but just for the sake of doing them to dispell the rumors.

I was standing 10 feet in front of him!

And that was the last, or nearly the last time he did splits at a show wasn't it? It wasn't too long after that when he stopped. RIP

Around late 2000/01 the change in his dancing onstage is notable. I think Kevin Smith noted an injury during his documentary filming.

There is a YouTube video were Kevin said one day while making the doc Prince told him he could not participate because he could not stand up due to pain. 😰

He carried a cane back in the 80's. I think the inital problems began way before 2000.

I saw the clip of him walking in airport with Eric Leeds from the Parade era with a walking cane.

He could do it then. He was 32 years old. When you're in your 20's and 30's you're not thinking about when you get in your 50's 60's or beyond.

I have to admit, I was in a state of denial about Prince having hip issues. I thought he had the cane for the most part just cause he tought it was cool, and you never saw a hint of a limp.
They say that the things that you do in your 20's/30's that are potentially harmful to your body, show their effects in a big way when you hit your 50's. Prince doing splits like this in addition to all of the other athletic things he was doing on stage, plus all of the other stuff he did re: simply recording? The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. If there was a definitive example of this adage, it's Prince.

It's all about how well you take care of yourself. Which you can tell he did. It's the fact that it was constant for him. He really never had a break, even if he wasn't dancing a while lot he was still in the heels! . I will always be grateful for the risks and sacrifices he made as a performer. As a professional dancer and choreographer, it's a day to day conversation with your body and I'm constantly assessing the limits that my body can endure for the sake of creativity and artistry. He pushed those limits for sure but he took care of his body, and did things nobody else did. . I think he felt the pressures from himself and the audience to keep doing the splits and jumping off pianos and speakers. I can only imagine the adrenaline he feels doing that kind of stuff in arenas to thunderous applause. It's a risk he was clearly willing to take. It's a part of his legacy, he truly gave it all up for his art 💜

I remember this. Didn't he call out that he would do something like 23 splits but only did a fraction? I thought maybe he bit off more than he could chew on that one. Kind of felt bad for the dude. I miss him... klick
