It's entirely P. It was recorded contemporaneously (although late in the period) with other Purple Rain material, but may never have been specifically intended for use on the album or in the film. It suited the need for musical accompaniment during the film's most torrid moments, and allowed P to incorporate more of his own work into the score of the film, which task most likely would have been covered by Michel Columbier had P not been invited to submit some instrumental material after principal photography (and pickup shots) had ended (January 1984), during the editing phase (February/March 1984) (that invitation led more importantly to the creation of 'When Doves Cry', and also most likely the instrumental take of 'Possessed' used in the club scenes).

To be honest, before to know what we know now I was ready to pay the actual entire price of the PR Expanded just for a CDsingle containing the only "God (Instrumental)".

A real jewel.

While there is something pure about the vocal version, there is also something very.... wince-worthy about it. The "bllloooop ah, OH! Aahh...." at the beginning just ... I don't know. It's really fucking weird. The instrumental is good until it gets into the heavy drum fills and damn near "In A Gadda Da Vida" drum soloing. It really loses its tenderness at that point. It reminds me how "Alexa De Paris", even in it's extended version, still goes back to the main hook, quiets down, and almost restarts itself. "Another Lonely Christmas" extended sorta gets into that long drum fill thing, too, but it seems to work much better. The "God" instrumental just turns into a mess. The first part - great, second part - where's the fader.

Wow, ALC extended has been out since 1984 on the "I Would Die 4 U" 12". You've never heard that? Hmmmm. And yeah, agree to disagree. Those drum fills etc are just a fucking mess for me. I'd not heard that instrumental outside the movie for literally decades until probably Napster days. I grabbed it, and excitedly listened. (I could never find the single w/ the instrumental over the years.) I was disappointed. It loses all melody and quaint musicality in the 2nd half. It's a love theme for fuck's sake! hahaha
