Peer 2 Peer Was Prince giving us a plan to deal with his vault? I am a firm believer that he left his catalog in a tangled web on purpose to make it difficult for others to profit. I believe his will was to leave his vault to his fans and he knew the tangled web would result in his fans getting his music easier. Most of us us got Montreux 2013 and the Deliverance EP for free from other fans. The Estate has had over a year and even PR Deluxe wont surpass either of those releases in my mind. I think fans need to get more active and we need to do this peer 2 peer thing. I remember him saying in tweets that the price didnt matter. Didnt make sense at the time. Makes sense now.

What about the "YesWeCode" initiative? Did they start at machine level and work up or just Arduino like some pale consumer? i wish i'd never kissed your lips, bearded lady

I can see this angle....He has also been quoted as saying that one day he would GIVE all his music away....
I have no guilt or shame in burning discs and sharing his work now..
WHen he was here, I would feel a teeny bit guilty about the Boots... But I couldnt resist them...
but not now..no guilt I share everything I can.. I want as many people as possible to benefit from the JOY his music brings

I think he wanted it that way. His peer 2 peer idea he dropped on us shortly before he passed was no accident. What made it odd is he didnt really talk about prices. He said charge what you want. That dude was a genius. Gave a bunch of invisible deeds to warners, universal, apple, tidal, spotify, his estate, lawyers, etc and left his music to us. My man is still running things from his grave. In other words, we must: STAND UP. ORGANIZE!!

Yes--this is right! I am with the idea 100%. Prince's music is for all of US to have! Nevermind the entertainment corporations--there's endless other talent around for those entities to pursue for their development and sales. > WE can organize to help get these tapes prepped and have the recordings ready to listen, and even distribute if need be. Collectively, WE can finance the work that needs doing to make it so. > TRUTH.

Would you have some ideas DonnyEnglish of HOW we go about this as Individuals and As a Collective..?
I must confess I didnt know much about P2P... but spent this morning researching and all I can say is WOW...
Ahead of his time AGAIn and AGAIN
Peer to PEER is essentially a Socialistic Model....
(Interesting to note in this article the use of the Word PRINCE and Revolution)
I am someone who has no fear in regards to
the need to protect Princes Legacy.. as I see it, It doesnt need protecting.. what he stood for and his incomparable Music will never die...He has Grown STRONGER and MORE powerful in his passing.I expect that to continue I have full faith in that
Having said that...I would definately like to be a participating party in this WHole Peer to peer thing.
HOW do we do it donnyenglish ?

kinda like the way y'all are thinking the only love there is is the love we make

Exactly how...pray tell...do you suppose you will get the music in the first place? We donβt mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

OK so who's going to leak stuff from the vault for fans to share with each other? Also NPG and others are still removing videos from YouTube and Facebook so I guess P2P didn't apply to that? Or Prince was fine with people sharing video so long as it didn't come from YouTube and Facebook? I have no problem cutting out the middle man but fans don't have access to the vault. π€ Paisley Park is in your heart

Someone leaked Montreux 2013. But, you are correct. We need access. There are enough vultures and chaos around Paisley where people will start to break ranks. I have no doubt that there will be more.

A will with clear instructions would've been a better way of doing that.

A will with clear instructions would've been a better way of doing that. That's true however I think he didn't trust anyone enough to take ownership of the vault. I think he literally left it to god to decide the fate of his music.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It won't be god deciding, it will be his legal heirs by default of him not leaving a will, and the executors, whose primary objective is paying otherwise avoidable tax bills.

The point being Prince never beleived in a system either legal or music business. Music industry is run by business men and lawyers....writing a will would not have changed much. The only advantage of writing a will would have been a more orderly release of his vault recordings...the end result will be the same which is someone will profit from it anyway.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I can totally believe that too.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i think he didnt leave a will because he couldnt trust anyone anyway....so the result is the same

I think Prince made it very clear that he is not in favour of bootlegging. Peer-to-peer is nothing else. Why would this be different after his death?
Besides that, it is illegal, at least as long as there is no legally binding will that actually allows for his work to be distributed for free after his death. Well, I am not a lawyer, but I think this how US law is drafted...
I cannot go into a store and just take things, if the owner of such store has died, claiming "I think this is what he wanted us to do..."

His whole stance against record companies wasn't just that he didn't like record companies -- he was fighting for artists' rights (namely, his own, but later on for others too) which included artistic freedom and income.

It seems Prince thought differently

In that clip Prince is talking about artist choice. If he wants to give away a particular song or album he can, or not.
