Haha... I just knew somebody was going to say that... It just adds to the confusion of those years..

In late 1993,there was a rumor that Prince was going to purposely give Warner Bros. some less-than-great material for the remaining albums on his contract....and that he would save the "amazing" songs for the post-Warners years. Thus, albums like Come and Chaos And Disorder are supposed to be the "contractual obligation" albums.Who knows, but I personally don't think that those albums are very good.A few decent tracks on both, but nothing really outstanding.

I really like this thread, I'm not the Prince music connoisseur everyone else is so it is nice to read opinions of the songs and go back and forth to Prince Vault. [Edited 5/8/17 14:30pm]

I object to blanket statements like these. This guy obviously knows nothing about either album. This guy knows that these albums were only made as contractual obligation to WB, so yes, they could be called "filler". Just because something is a contractual obligation it has to be filler? Aren't all albums once u sign up on a label "contractual obligations"? Prince was too proud of his warner output, he always gave them killer stuff. Including, a century later, aoa. Funky alien

He already spoke about why Interactive was replaced. It didn't fit with the Come vibe and it was too samey to open TGE with Endorphin. That's why Pussy Control, up to then left off most configurations, took its place. Come was a fully thought out concept. Filler, it was not.

- Yes, I can imagine. But honestly its hard to imagine a forum where a Beatles fan would say that ´White album´ sucks and their first one is better, for example. The only fan forum I ever been besides Prince was Living Colour´s. And I never saw big disagreements there.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
- Ah, that was the reason? Too bad. If TGE had ´Interactive´, ´Days of Wild´ and ´The Ride´ (replacing We March, Shy and 319) it would be perfect for me.

There is lots of filler. Prince was very hit and miss. I consider all the following filler. . 4U - So Blue, Crazy You Prince - When were dancing close and slow, With you DM - None CO - None 1999 - SOTT none Black - 2 Nigs united for west compton (Most instrumentals are fillers unless u r Joe Satriani) Lovesexy - None Batman - Trust, Vicki Waiting, Lemon Crush GB - New Power Generation pts 1 and 2, Tick Tick Bang, Love Machine, The Latest Fashion, Melody Cool, Graffiti Bridge D and P - Jughead, Push Symbol - Arrogance, The Flow, Vanessa Segues The Hits/Bsides - Pope Come - Solo TGE - Npg operators CD - Had U, I rock there4 I am Emancipation - Da da Da, Mr Happy, Face Down, Slave, New World, Get yo groove on, We gets up, Emale, The Plan, Friend mother what ever the fuck its called Truth - all of it except Don't Play me and Animal Kingdom New Power Soul -all of it except come on and The one Raves - Prettyman, Undisputed, Everyday is a winding road (Larry bits only), the empty track space after whereever u go. Crystal Ball - Excluding Kamasutra and the Truth, the 3 main CDs are filler free TRC - This album is a filler, The Work Pt1, Last December, 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 NEWS - Filler ONA all of them - Mediocre, not filler but very hard to get into NPGMC - Mostly filler on these, some okay songs, lot of fillery rubbish (C note, Slaighterhouse, Xpectation, Chocolate Invasion). Musicology - On the couch, The song about afros being the largest 3121 - No filler here Planet Earth - Mr Goodnight, Futurebabymama Lotusflow3r - From the Lotus, $, 77 Beverley Park, Back 2 the Lotus MPLSOUND - None here, but overall average rather than good album 20 Ten - Everybody loves me PLE - Boytrouble, Marz, Ainturninround AOA - Art Official Cage, Affirmations Phase 1 - Shut this down, Like a Mack, Mr Nelson, This could be us remix Phase 2 - None . Not to say some of the filler is not enjoyable, but none of the above tracks I feel add much to his legacy and quite a few subtract from it. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

In my opinion their are only two complete albums,as in one fully delivered concept, in his catalogue. These are Purple Rain and Parade. So filler seems a harsh word every other album has varying degrees of input.

I know what you mean but it "fits" with the bigger picture. Maybe you think it's filler but I think a lot of people use that word when they don't like it. I'm sure you don't. In terms of 1999 I think Free is both a filler n incredibly twee. Almost to the extent of being almost a bit embarrassing. The rest of the album has either sexual overtones or personal frustrations. Free sits alone. I think in the 1980s this particular stands out with prince as his albums were definitively one drop concepts. By the 90s he had more eclecticism in terms of themes within each album

But it's not a bad thing, in fact is very good thing, variety is a positive thing to have. Although i'm not going to lie, sometimes too much variety is overwhelming.
