Wait...Prince ate at McDonalds? Wtf? I know this seems like a silly topic but last night I was watching Purple Reign, a little documentary on Prince and someone said you would always see him at McDonald's and that he loved it there. Ok, I'm perplexed. I can't imagine Prince eating at McDonald's. Can someone shed some light on this topic so I can sleep at night lol.

When I first got into Prince I was a teenager in the 80s, and of course there were copious articles and interviews about him not to mention all the other media sources that did stories about him, and all of these I read and followed religiously at the time and I distinctly remember the reports that he really liked McDonald's fries. I don't remember if he ate other stuff from McDs as well but I know I remember about his liking their french fries.

Probably liked them then too but the articles I read in the 80s were refering to him during the 1999/PR timeframe!

Sorry, no source on this, but I recall reading an interview with a fan who met him in '87/'88 and chatted to him over a McDonalds -- on his tour bus, i think -- and he told her how much he loved it.
So he was certainly still eating that stuff in the late eighties.
In '91 he was rolling his eyes at Michael B ordering the massive chicken bucket in one of the interludes on the D&P video -- so perhaps his love of junk food was starting to wane at that point.

Well, there is the often told story about how he used to stand outside Mickey D's just to smell the food because he couldn't afford to buy it--I guess when he was a kid. I would imagine that when he could finally afford it, he eventually ate there. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Iirc, isn't it the 1985 Rolling Stone interview by Neal Karlen that Prince discusses going by the McDonald's just to smell the food as a teen because he didn't have enough money to purchase anything? It could have been another restaurant, but I think it was McDonalds.

This could 'possibly' ???? be the Mcdonalds where Prince says he used to stand outside (broke) and smell food. Minneapolis, MN 55404
From 1970 through 1972, Prince’s father was living at 1707 Glenwood Ave., Apt. 105. *google says this is the closest Mcdonalds to his dads place.

Wow! I'm stunned but it seems it was mostly in the early days. I would probably faint if I find out he was eating there within the last 10 years of his life.

I remember reading this, I'm sure the article said something about Prince flying into Heathrow and taking some Jackson fans to Mc D's. I remember that it said that apparently he didn't have any money to pay the bill. So the fans ended up making a collection and paying the bill. I'm sure there was even a picture of him standing in line wearing a long white(ish) coat with '88 on the sleeve. But this also could've been one of the made up newspaper stories that seemed to go around back then. I'd love to know if it really happened. Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...

This made me laugh a lot...
Some of the shit you could get away with back before the advent of the internet...i guess its worse now. But in the UK you would often get crazy stories in the papers (The Sun) and the sheep picking up the paper would be led to believe that Prince lived in a torture dungeon lit by candles (oh and he put the odd record out too!)

Yes! He also mentioned a filet mignon. :Pop Life live in Detroit:

Even Julia Child liked McDonald's french fries. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I remember an interview in where he said he use to stand outside and smell the food once when he didn't have any money. This was on HOUSEQUAKE.

The Sun is the lowest piece of journalism ever. It makes the Enquirer look like the New York Times.

I can't post the link but if you search the .org for Cool Collage you'll find a relevant thread.

He also ate ribs at Rudolph's and many other places that the later-day Prince wouldn't go to.
