Exactly. I read that somebody built him a huge rack setup with a midi controller in the mid-late 80's and he hated it. But at the same time he used drum machines and a Fairlight synthesizer lol. He liked technology but when it came to a lot of things he was simple...shockingly.
This.
That was Susan Rogers. There was a guitar player who said Prince asked him why he was using the volume knobs on his guitar and his amp instead of just using one. He said something that simple worked so much better. Brand new boogie without the hero. |

It´s true. When it comes to guitar, he was a very simple guy. I wouldnt say conservative, because he was using Digitech Whammy since the beginning of the 90s (Live 4 Love). |

BTW, I noticed a ´Phase´ patch on his MM-4. I dont remember Prince using Phaser (he used Flanger a lot). Maybe he combined it with Flanger in those ´insane wave sound´ moments that he did from 2002-2009? [Edited 5/2/17 9:43am] |

I thought I knew all about the drum achnes (I own a Linndrumm LM2) but I have no idea what yuo're talking about here!!! Is this a 90s thing?
No, not at all! It was purely a Revolution/Bobby thing... Going back to at least the Controversy tour. You'll notice there are some drum sounds that are not Simmons Drums or LM-1. Big wooshes or trippy toms. It's on the Albums, too.
Hmmmmm some song examples? I neer even herad of that drum machine
.
I didn't even know he used Simmons (well other than we saw the Simmons pads on the America ive video but I assumed he hooked the pads up to a Linn brain since the snares sound like Linn).

I think one of the main reasons he liked Boss pedals was the large switches used on them. We know what type of shoes he usually wore.

Syncussion is not a drum machine, it's a drum synthesizer. You see the 4 10-inch toms on the front right of Bobby's kit, those are Syncussion triggers, and the brains where you can adjust and program the sounds are to the side.
The intro to Controversy has Syncussion all over it.
On the Purple Rain tour you can hear the Simmons drum toms used on the intro to Take Me With U.

I'm a gear freak so I'm loving this photo. His board has been the same for most of his career. For somebody who could do so much with the guitar he didn't use boutique amps or pedals. Used affordable stuff. You could easily copy his sound if you play with the settings but you'd never REALLY sound like Prince lol they hate his gear in guitar forums cause it's so simple.
The archivist said most of his jewelry was costume and he didn't have many expensive designer sunglasses either. I love hearing that.
I loved hearing that as well made him more down to earth. No Hope diamonds are $1,000 dollar sunshades althought he obvisously went Imelda Marcos with the shoes and crazy with the clothes but I am clothes horse so I get it. |

Good point. And Boss pedals are very reliable. Can be used for 20 years without breaking. Their design is cool too. |

I always wondered what those 4 toms were! Thanks.
Not sure I get the difference between a drum machine and a drum synth though. |

In this case it means that syncussuon doesn't have a sequencer. You can't program beats on syncussion. You can set up different sounds, but you have to play the sounds manually on the pads.
Edit: Also, Syncussion is literally a synthesizer. Like in many cases synthesizer have a keyboard interface, this one has drum pads to trigger the sounds. [Edited 5/3/17 16:42pm] |
