So the most deluxe version of the set has 4 discs? A little disappointing that there's no second concert which seems to be a contradiction of what was said earlier, but at the price of £25 this does look like quite a decent package. Might hold off on preordering though as I'd like to know how good the quality of the Syracuse concert is, if it's only as good as the best bootleg DVDs then I'd probably be happy with just the 2 disc version as it's the outtake disc that's the real attraction for me, and for most of us I'd imagine. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

That would be brilliant. A parting gift from him to the fans. I'd laugh my balls off at the whine fest on here... Darling Nikki procrastinating with a magazine etc

You are of course right, but it is also because they've had one year to prepare this and, while we get our money's worth, we all want more. We need our purple fix, I guess!

Deliverance and Montreux 2013 DVD remain the best releases since his passing by a long shot. The dude left a vault of thousands of treasures and the best they can do in over a year is one dvd of vault material? The Syracuse dvd and the singles/12 inch cd are truly disappointments. In the words of Billy Sparks "what a f&cking waste." [Edited 4/28/17 5:09am]

I hope it's just confusion & will contain 2 concert films Yes I'm very upset with their lies, was planning to buy Expanded PR but now I will choose the 2 Disc version instead Welcome 2 The Dawn

[Edited 4/28/17 4:38am] Only seven years until the 40th anniversary super deluxe edition. Be patient 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I've just preordered the (hopefully) 4 disc version for £24.99 which seems quite reasonable to me. http://amzn.to/2oPocFQ Shame there isn't a Blu-Ray HD audio version, I would pay a lot more for that!

They delayed the release to give us this crap? I thought Susan Rodgers said they were taking their time to make it extra special. If this is the best they can do then folks need to just put the good stuff out there for free like they did with Montreux and Deiverance. Someone release Second Coming please. These companies, trustees and estate cant get their acts together.

My philosophy with respect to the release of Prince material is exactly the same as it was when he was alive:

Buying the double CD would mean getting the unreleased stuff for a fair price. That's fine with me! I never cared much for that Syracuse concert, so you won't hear me complain.

I do not remember anyone saying Susan Rogers was involved one of the press announcements today is saying Prince worked on this in 2015. I am not sure how much involvement the estate had in this project because it appears to have been underway before Prince died and we still do not know what the terms and conditions of the licensing deal is with WB and apparently, the estate did not bother to find out either before cutting a deal with Universal.
I imagine that we will see more involvement with the estate on future releases.

Electric Intercouse sounds like an early version. It is interesting to hear because it shows how the song evolved. But, it almost ruins the live version for me. This studio version makes it an even bigger travesty that the August 1983 live DVD is not part of the box set. Non-Diehard fans won't know the brilliance of that song.

Yes, disappointing for us die-hards, but I always felt that a 5CD version seemed expensive and a little niche for a release that could have significant mainstream appeal (Prince's most famous album, released a year after his death etc). These sets make more economic sense, unfortunately. That said, they're nice collections for the price, and on the plus side they might succeed in sparking interest in Prince's vault material more broadly.

Personally, I love the studio version. The difference isn't THAT great, no more than you'd expect from live and studio versions of any given track. I think it's slightly jarring initially because we're so familiar with the previously circulating version. I agree, a few elements such the drum programming feel a little rudimentary by Prince's standards and give the impression of it being an early version, but as others have said, he wasn't a stranger to minimalism either. There are some extraordinary things going on vocally, and overall I think that it works beautifully.

I can respect your thoughts on it. This is one of those songs where fans will be all over the spectrum. I've heard some say that they think it is a lot better than the live version. For me, the studio version is a throw away track and the live version is a classic, but that is just me. One thing is for sure, the Purple Rain Deluxe Package is an overall disappointment, but I am happy to get the one CD of vault material. I just had my hopes up for two CD's of "unreleased new material" and 2 DVD's of live performances.
The absense of songs like G-Spot, Wednesday, etc. is also disappointing. Maybe they will release the August 1983 DVD, alternative cuts of the movie, outtakes from the movie, etc. with the re-release of the movie DVD. WB is good for breadcrumbing Prince fans. I feel like they lost a window of opportunity here.
