Just for proper lossless audio alone at least bluray should be used... Most young fans will probably have an xbox or playstation or bluray player to play dvd's on... Neversin.

I would agree, except I'm pretty sure they could do lossless PCM audio on a DVD. No?

Depends on the size needed for watchable video I guess...

DVD sales are still strong in the US, and frankly it's easier to include a DVD w/ a CD than to get someone to buy it alone, especially for music fans. I don't like everything digital-only. Shit gets lost, hacked, etc. But a DVD is there for ya, like a your bed, or a dildo.

As you noted: You can't increase an old BETA or VHS original to 1920x1080 without significant change in quality. The 720 is a stretch, but much more reasonable to try and master it into an HD format. It just never translates that well, depending.

And Neversin has a good point. There is always going to be a DVD player with on a computer or a gaming system. We still have bluray players in every room. And although digital is popular, they've really not put out 3D digital. Other people have mimicked it and it works if your TV has a "make 3D" type setting. But those 4K 3D blurays sell to those who want that.

So - in short, there's a demographic for any format. Some would say CDs are dying, but I would bet the vast majority of the Org folks will pick up the physical format, and not digital.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I've got some music DVDs that have room for both PCM & DD5.1, so, I think it would fit.

If I'm wrong, then I'm with you. Lossless audio is a must, if it takes a bluray to fit then a bluray it should be. wink

They're still fairly commonly found on PCs (desktop and laptop). The CD drives on them play DVDs too.

Most laptops on the market doesn't have any optical drive these days so u have to buy an external DVD drive. Young fans can play the DVD in their ps4 and xbox one but I don't think there's any high demand for DVDs in 2017

Prince Estate Shopping New 'Purple Rain' Concert Film, Documentary to Streaming Services: Sources

Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images
Prince performs at the Fabulous Forum on Feb. 19, 1985 in Inglewood, Calif.

In one of his first dealings as an advisor to the Prince estate, Spotify executive Troy Carter is helping negotiate a deal that could give one major streaming service exclusive rights to one of the late pop star’s unreleased concert films as well as rights to make a documentary about the film, sources tell Billboard.

The lucky streaming service isn’t likely to be Carter’s employer, though: the estate is talking to a range of Spotify’s rivals including Apple Music, sources say.

The potential multimillion-dollar deal, which hasn’t yet been completed, could be the latest prize in the competition among streaming companies, a battle that has been ratcheting up lately as top players shell out millions for exclusive content that can help them stand out from the pack.

I noticed the tracks on the regular vinyl say "2015 Paisley Park Remaster", while the picture disc tracks say "2014 Remastered Version". I wonder how much of a difference there is, if there is any at all.

That's a good question. I was wondering how the new remastered lp will compare with the remastered lp that just came out last year...

I'm not against a physical format - it's what I'd prefer myself. I just think that in 5-6 years, this DVD release of the Syracuse show is going to be as easy to play as the VHS copy I have now.

Nah!

DVD's play on DVD Players, Bluray Players, computer disc drives and all gaming systems.
VHS only play on VHS players.

In 5-6 years it will still not be difficult or expensive to lay hands on a player.

Not only that, it's also as easy to rip a DVD as it is a CD. Once a physical copy is in my collection I'll be backing up a digital copy on a hard drive and having my cake and eating it too... wink

But the example that was shown and deleted shows that SOMEONE out there has it. Its a shame if it isnt really being worked on by WB etc or the powers that be to have it released.

Im tripping that everyone here is saying that snippet was ho hum quality lol.

All fans out there have it who have "The Makings Of Rain" DVDR save for the audio...
People who criticise the quality of the sample have compared it to what they have ("The Makings Of Rain") and that isn't too much quality wise...
Rumour has it that the owner of First Avenue has the original tape (and that of the 1986 Parade gig)...
My guess is it won't be long before the soundboard audio of the 1983 show will be widely spread since it's already being shopped around and traded like fuck... Panic is spreading amongst some traders who can't keep their cool thanks to that sample...

Neversin.

So with the news that the estate is offering it to streaming services how likely is it we'll be seeing this soon from elite collectors?????

I really don't want to belabor the discussion about the clip from Sifi, and what is circulating (Makings of the Rain DVD), but I do want to point out a very important differnce in the 2.

As the Sifi clip begins it fades into a shot of Prince sliding up his guitar, adn then transitions to a shot of him from behind/side of him.

If you compare this same section to what is on The Makings Of The Rain DVD, you will notice that the shot of prince sliding up his guitar has a tracking issue. The video goes static and then gray, then comes back and transitions to the shot from behind/side. This proves that the source of this is most likely a multi-generation VHS dub.

Thsi isn't a huge deal, but I do think it proves that whatever Sifi put out there is from a different and cleaner source.

I still stand by my thoughts on the improvements overall on Sifi's clip too. There is minimal ghosting, color is better. The blacks are black, the details are more crisp and not muddy like what is circulating.

Willing to share a back to back comparison for those interested.

[Edited 5/4/17 10:23am]

[Edited 5/4/17 10:26am]

There are multiple low generation copies of this show with grey dropouts in different parts of the show; I have 3 versions on VHS: 1 copy is horrible almost black and white but doesn't have the warbled dropout at the beginning of "When U Were Mine", another one doesn't have the dropout you speak of that is on "The Makings Of Rain", it does however have a millisecond brief grey flash 5 seconds before the first verse of "Purple Rain" which isn't on "The Makings Of Rain" and then there's the copy which is exactly like "The Makings Of Rain"... So maybe it's a cleaner source or it's the same as one of the sources I have which have all been circulating since the 1990's... For a version without dropouts either the original tapes should be used and re-edited because I was told the original also has dropouts or someone should "Frankenstein" a version of all available sources... Neversin.

So the estate is now offering a version from PRince's vault, the original tapes are either lost or in the hands of someone other than the estate. If the estate makes a deal with say Netflix then who will handle the cleaning of the footage? Is this something Netflix will do or does the estate need to do this before offering it to them? And if the footage in Prince's vault isn't much better than what we already have except for the sound quality, how interested will the streaming services be?

I never even added "Electric Intercourse" to my Spotify. Listened to it, know it's there if I want to listen to again. I'll add whatever unreleased tracks I like, but that's as far as most folks are going to go to "purchase" this release.

It's all about track streams now.

When I was a kid you could go to a Warehouse music store and listen to albums track by track in a little kiosk on an end-cap and wondered out loud why we couldn't just get the exact tracks we wanted instead of the whole album.

Thankfully that day has come.
Thankfully for me as a consumer, not so much for the labels or artists. If Prince was still around I would make sure to support him by going to his shows and stream his songs I like through Spotify. All I can do is stream his tracks now, but I could care less where the money goes. Someone is getting paid.

I remember in the 80s reading that was something they were going to be doing "soon" and then again when CDRs became popular. But the tech changed so fast and now we have it where we can either buy just what we want have and save it to our media of choice. (I have a set of CDRS with about 6 albums each CDR so it helps with not having to change on my daily commute)

what I want to see is a way to mix your own versions of songs... but I doubt there is enough interest in that.

It sort of depends, from what I've seen. When something is posted to iTunes like this, it can leak extremely quickly because it's no longer in solely the label's hands.

We'll see. If Questlove already has the file (but didn't have it before now), seems to me it's out there in some fashion. I'd be surprised if it took another month to leak. Maybe wider than Prince.org, but someone here should have it by then.
