It obviously wasn't. Do you have any idea how difficult it would be to televise a concert live while it's being shot on film in that kind of setting? Not to mention, there's no apparent film artifacts on any of the video transfers.

It was not shot on film.

[Edited 5/2/17 3:39am]

I don't know what it was or wasn't shot on but either way I'd imagine that they also have a separate audio source regardless of how the video was shot. This could be re-mastered and you could have a much better soundtrack on the Blu-Ray even if the picture wasn't much better. People seem to forget that Blu-Ray can have lossless audio.

If it's on DVD, it will most assureadly have lossy (MP3) audio, not even 320kbps, probably 192kbps.

SOME DVDs do have lossless PCM audio, but that is a rarity...

Blurays can handle full HD, lossless audio.

Also hoping for the option of 5.1 or stereo audio. I personally prefer stereo for things like this.

Yeah, fake surround mixes of stereo sources are pretty pointless, and always underwhelming.

If this is authentic and not the fan made one, how is it he has it now. Did the collector-leggers or those in the estate who have it, just give it to him?

Questlove insists its real and I think he's had it for a while. . The plot thickens with Mathieu Bitton saying on Twitter 'the master was not at WB and wasn't found anywhere. 7.21 version was sent back to Prince in June 87.' .

It would be such a smart-less and illogical decision to shot concerts only on video, even in 1985; especially from a firm/ artist that revolutionized the music industry by being #1 in album, radio, singles and theaters at the same time. I have hard time to actually believe that.

.

Based on what? Go on, list all of those concerts that were filmed on film and not on video. Doing things on film was back then a fuckload harder than video, and more expensive. Sheesh, Prince filmed SOTT on film and then had close to zero workable footage and ended up reshooting a phoney concert at PP.

But when YOU say the inclusion of Syracuse was a given, which is clearly speculation on your part, that is ok? YOU have no idea if Syracuse was intended to be included as of the deal in 2014.

Correct. But it would be absurd to release a box set and not include an already released concert.

The Second Coming was shot on film and Prince bought the concert reels back from the director.

After about three days of meetings and discussions with Prince and his management, I spent a few days on the road watching and blocking the live show for the film shoot. We shot it at the Met Center [in Bloomington, Minnesota] on March 7, 1982. That was a very cold night towards the end of the tour. I’m pretty sure we covered it with five principal cameras—16mm color—and a possible sixth rolling camera for audience shots.

(...)

We were still in the process of cutting the concert at the same time. His management did come back to me several times over the years to discuss the project, but nothing materialized. The film just sat there.

(...)

About five years ago, I get a call from someone saying, “Prince wants to talk to you.” He gets on the phone and says, “You’re not gonna hold me hostage are you?” [laughs] I told him no, I just want to get paid what was due back then! There was no other issue—I just wanted to get my due. After we settled up, I turned over the Met Center footage to him. Including all the camera originals and work prints.

He was very protective of his image back in the day, a little less today, but still wants to keep everything under lock and key. At the time, he didn’t ask about the dramatic scenes; it was like they didn’t exist. Nothing has been done with it. There’s not a lot there though, because it was just the start of the whole idea.

In fact, I thought the footage of those sequences was lost. I called the film lab we originally used and various post-houses around Minneapolis looking for it. No luck. But a little over a year ago, I did manage to locate it in my vault. I sent him a few letters and never heard anything. So if I see him one day, I’ll let him know it’s safe and secure. Maybe if he sees this interview, he’ll reach out to me. Or sue me—one of the two. [laughs] I technically own the footage but can’t do anything with it due to licensing restrictions.

Ah fair enough, sorry :-p

I'm no expert but I think since the concert was broadcast live it would have almost certainly been shot on video.

Regardless, I'd like to see SiFi back because he or she has GREAT inside information.

Anyone from Warner's should be banned until they release truthful statements or stop with the cashgrab releases.
They are causing a lot of disappointment.

WB can grab the fuck outta my cash as long as they keep releasing sets like this. Are they perfect? No. But it's not even $40 for the deluxe set. What the fuck.

Well said, KS!

Rather than focus on what the set doesn't include, I'll judge it by what is included and the price point.

Sure, I'd rather have an 8CD/4BD set, housed in a truly deluxe packaging that looks great displayed on a shelf and includes every possible track and video with any whatsoever relation to the Purple Rain project plus other collectible goodies like a t-shirt or reprint of the tour book. I'd gladly pay premium prices for such a release.

That said, for what IS included, I'm happy to drop less than $35 for the remaster, a disc of vault tracks, a disc of singles tracks and a DVD of the LOOOOONG out of print Syracuse show.

I get the feelings some have about the the singles tracks, but, including such things in sets like this is standard and logical and who isn't happy to finally get God Instrumental & Another Lonely Christmas Extended on CD? As for the DVD release of Syracuse, it's about fricking time! No?

I can't wait. Especially looking forward to pristine copies of Prince doing Dance Electric, Computer Blue Extended & We Can Fuck. Those 3 tracks alone make it a must have in my opinion.

cool
