Of course tapes can be damaged beyond repair. In fact, stored properly tapes still deteriorate, given enough time they deteriorate beyond repair. Stored improperly, it happens even faster.
It's pretty rare these days though, such is the level of progression in audio techniques - it can be painstaking and expensive though. |

Yep. You even had the recent case of some Bob Marley reels having been discovered in a London hotel basement, which were heavily water damaged - but they've been restored.
I know I've mentioned this before but the multis for his albums were digitally transferred in the early 2000s - so I don't buy into this whole thing of a lot of what's in the vault being beyond salvaging.
Exactly. Those Marley tapes were sat in a flooded basement for 40 YEARS. They were in an awful state, truly "beyond repair". Yet they were able to clean those up to audiophile grade sound quality (done just down the road from where i live incidently).
So i dont doubt tapes in PP may have some damage and need work, but no way are they beyond saving Bitch this ain't the movies |

stop talking about "remastering from VHS". Just because it first came out on VHS, that doesn't mean it was recorded on VHS – quite obviously it wasn't! VHS is not a professional format (actually it was the worst of the consumer video formats too) therefore it wasn't ever used for professional recording. Probably it was recorded on U-matic (BVU) or Beta.
I already said this on bottom of page 17 but clearly nobody reads so you need to repeat!

1. Actually WE all actually KNOW nothing when it comes to the vault. None of us have seen it or been in it. The one thing we do know is that back in the 90s HM Buff (pretty sure it was him) said in an interview that the vault was in a bad way and that many of the tapes were deteriorating and needed to be baked and also digitised but that Prince wasn't that interested (at the time).
. There have been several independent stories of the vault's AC having failed, of tapes being strewn accross the floor, of it being so full tapes were stacked in the room before the vault, etc. Considering the Elvis estate admitting to having parties each weekend to fund repairs of PP because some parts were in a bad state is also not reassuring. There we go then. I could only actually remember the HM Buff interview but suspected there were others who witnessed and reported similar concerns. Hi there, I am getting strong signals that Warner is definitely listening to the comments posted here and elsewhere online. They ARE 100% aware of the expectations based on previous statements. I am convinced they are working hard getting the First Avenue 1983 show up to standards for release.
Unfortunately, it won’t be in time for the announced June 23rd release, but that was the original plan.
It's not someone’s deliberate choice or fault, it's just a matter of how things are, production-wise.
. Exactly. And there couldn't be much more delay, because then they were competing with long-planned Autumn releases and the compilations etc. for the Christmas market etc. This needed to be out ASAP, simple as that. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other promo activities tied to this, including perhaps exclusive magazine features etc., and those were tied to a schedule as well. Delaying this more weeks or even months was likely not an option. Bart you are flip flopping a bit with your views on this release (not like you). Do I think this release is underwhelming? Yes. But matter of fact, I don't blame Warners. I blame Prince. He's the one who failed to curate his back catalogue, he's the one who obstructed and sabotaged this release for two years, and he continues to be an impediment due to the fact that the vault appears to be a complete mess. Prince has sat on that tape of the August 1983 show for thirty years and appears to have done zero work on it -- bitch about that! Prince signed a deal for this PR Deluxe in May 2014 -- and then apparently did nothing except a remaster in 2015.
.
And these days Warners have to deal with warring factions in the estate, plus obviously a significant amount of practical (locating the correct tapes, for instance) and legal issues (the estate selling off rights to unreleased music to Universal in a shady deal). © Bart Van Hemelen

yup they are not! Even now they can cancel it all! and WB is not legally obligated to do so, they OWE an explanation as to what happened.

No, it was filmed on film. And then edited on video. That's why for the BD they went back to those films, scanned them at a high resolution and re-edited the resulting digital video EXACTLY like the existing episodes, and did CGI that for the most part exatly matched the existing (cheesy) original one. This has been widely reported on. This has cost a fuckton of money and apparently it isn't making them enough money so they're not gonna do it for DS9 or Voyager. © Bart Van Hemelen

Except it wasn't. It was on film. As Bart stated, they spent a lot of money to remaster those episodes, and greatly update the effects. They look great overall considering the time they were filmed, and how little effort they put into preserving them to the point of the remasters. But to think that was shot on video like Sesame Street is just not getting the facts right.
One could surmise that they were hoping for a windfall based on the Star Trek movie reboot to sell TNG blurays, but it didn't work out like that. Plus, they're just so fucking expensive.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Heh--you could also apply the same sentiment to Prince's past promises that you'd ritually slam? And--to beat you to your next statement--of course WB breaking their promises is that darn Prince's fault, too.

So you admit that this kind of marketing is just one of those selling games to build product anticipation, with less indignation toward the industry agent?

I'm hoping that they get the stuff out soon too, but whenever the stuff is actally readly to be sold is when it will be time for it to be sold. The situation isn't quite like a climate control agreement--although climate control of Prince's vault may be greater reason for the delay. All bootleg collectors should just be sure to buy it so that funds can eventually pipeline to the caretakers of Paisley Park, if U care.

Maybe because Prince was more interested in creating new music than to work on old stuff for a Deluxe version....?
This release is more than we thought we would get before maybe two years ago....

BluRay has been around for a decade now and by now it's a widely adopted format. A cheap player costs about $60 new, maybe half for a second hand one. So I don't think it's an unrealistic expectation that a record collector (I think I can safely assume that most of us here are collectors) invests a bit in the current format.
We all want high quality releases – and they shouldn't be technically crippled by some stupid decision to stick to a legacy format.

OMG seriously? WTF cares! Y'all fussin' over stupid shit.
Gheezus, let's go over this: This was part of the 2014 deal with Warner. The PR part of the deal fell through because Prince didn't think WB wanted to pay him what he thought was fair for the release (he tweeted that).
However, part of that deal was Prince getting his masters back.
Prince oversaw the whole PR compilation. He signed off on it. There is no second DVD. Things change. It's 1 DVD w/ Syracuse.
So yeah, it is a vault release - it's Prince's masters, that he agreed to remaster, and dig into and put this out. Period. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
