You can tell from the snippet that upscaling the video (whatever format...) would be next to useless. The only benifit for a Blu Ray release would be lossless sound.
. It's not about upscaling (although a little bit of improvement can be achieved that way too). It's about having it on BluRay to avoid the horrible 4% speed up of PAL DVDs. It's a music video, so even if the picture quality is not that great, at least the music should play in the right key and tempo! [Edited 4/29/17 4:45am] |

Many lables are aware of the 4% speed up, so they correct it before it goes to press. Otherwise, buy the NTSC version? Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain. |

. You can only correct the key by digital pitchshifting, but that won't correct the speedup in tempo.
NTSC is worse in picture quality.
We need BluRay. |

What? They change the speed of the playback BEFORE they convert it to PAL. Then, it's the correct speed. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain. |

. It's far from being as simple as you might think. Coverting 24fps to 25fps is a tricky task and is never without negative side-effects.
We need BluRay. I think Warners could afford the the extra cost in mastering. |

I don't know where you get that. NTSC has a faster frame rate than PAL, and besides the show was shot in NTSC. So, there's not going to be any conversion difficuties or anything like that.

1. Actually WE all actually KNOW nothing when it comes to the vault. None of us have seen it or been in it. The one thing we do know is that back in the 90s HM Buff (pretty sure it was him) said in an interview that the vault was in a bad way and that many of the tapes were deteriorating and needed to be baked and also digitised but that Prince wasn't that interested (at the time).
.
There have been several independent stories of the vault's AC having failed, of tapes being strewn accross the floor, of it being so full tapes were stacked in the room before the vault, etc. Considering the Elvis estate admitting to having parties each weekend to fund repairs of PP because some parts were in a bad state is also not reassuring. © Bart Van Hemelen

When I had lunch with Manuela in February, she confirmed that there were occasions when Prince would ask for a reel to be brought up to the studio from the vault, and it would be damaged beyond repair
And that, of course, was over 10 years ago.

Hi there, I am getting strong signals that Warner is definitely listening to the comments posted here and elsewhere online. They ARE 100% aware of the expectations based on previous statements. I am convinced they are working hard getting the First Avenue 1983 show up to standards for release.
Unfortunately, it won’t be in time for the announced June 23rd release, but that was the original plan.
It's not someone’s deliberate choice or fault, it's just a matter of how things are, production-wise.
.
Exactly. And there couldn't be much more delay, because then they were competing with long-planned Autumn releases and the compilations etc. for the Christmas market etc. This needed to be out ASAP, simple as that. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other promo activities tied to this, including perhaps exclusive magazine features etc., and those were tied to a schedule as well. Delaying this more weeks or even months was likely not an option. © Bart Van Hemelen

Honestly, my only experiene with Blue Ray is going over to my friends house and watching classic movies, and they just look really weird. They look like video, that's the only way I can describe it. I don't know what 'the soap opera effect' is.
Note: I used to work in video production, and spent hours upon hours dealing with issues of video quality, but that was before blu-ray, really.

Indeed, PP had suffered from long-neglected maintenance and needed repairs:
Several million dollars were spent last year to rehabilitate the 30-year-old building, including work on the roof and the heating and cooling systems. More structural work was needed. Money for all this could not come from the estate, which has the first priority of paying off an estimated $100 million tax bill heightened by Prince’s lack of a will. (Star Tribune, April 2017)

The settings on your friend's TV are probably good for things like sports but shitty for films. For example, Samsung HDTVs have a setting called "Action Motion Plus" or some bullshit. It's terrible for movies. It WILL make them look like video because it messes with the frame rate. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I get that, and they have a fair point. I was talking to the people saying, "I already have these!"
That said, while it was pretty sketchy to say "two albums", we are getting 76 minutes of unreleased music here. That's longer than 1999, and almost as long as Sign o' the Times!

Of course tapes can be damaged beyond repair. In fact, stored properly tapes still deteriorate, given enough time they deteriorate beyond repair. Stored improperly, it happens even faster.

Yep. You even had the recent case of some Bob Marley reels having been discovered in a London hotel basement, which were heavily water damaged - but they've been restored.
I know I've mentioned this before but the multis for his albums were digitally transferred in the early 2000s - so I don't buy into this whole thing of a lot of what's in the vault being beyond salvaging. |
