Official press release, per Dr. Funkenberry:

http://www.drfunkenberry....pre-order/

This is all amateurism here : WB says that PURPLE RAIN sold 13 millions in the US. But his sales exceded 15 million, and are probably now standing at 15.7 millions. By the end of the year, it will reach the 16 million mark in the USA (if they ever promote it, of course eek )

.

Wouldn't it be the right time for WB to recertify this album ? It will make great publicity to officially reach the 15 million mark, and recertify it some weeks later with the 16 million mark.

.

PURPLE RAIN is in fact one the 15 best selling album of all time in the USA. This is not uninteresting in a press release to communicate. This would be a good reminder that Prince was a huge seller.

Sadly last time Purple Rain was certified was in 1996 with 13x Million in the USA.

Surely it has sold over a million since then...

From WB press release :

."In its initial run, the theatrical musical generated over $220 million worldwide at the box office against an estimated $7.2 million budget"

.

.

Not true. They inflated the worldwide grossing, but not the production budget.

It was supposed to be released in 2014 for the 30th anniversary.

But Prince only delivered it to them in 2015 ?!

.

I still don't understand why WB accepted to release AOA / PLEC ELEC instead. That is an obvious lack of commercial sense.

Or, like I repeat since 2014, it's because Prince only accepted to give 2 or 3 songs. There was also supposed to have huge promotion "a la Diamonds and pearls" according to Funk-U at the time. I still think WB sat on it, simply because without Prince's involvement and promotion, it was not worth selling it.

.

Now that he's dead, they can pick the songs they want in their personnal vault. Because Prince gave them some songs that were initially supposed to be on the album. WB was always involved with the selection of tracks of his albums, even with COME. And remember the SOTT and 1999 episode, a 3 disc set that were cut into two.

.

I don't think WB have the original tape. I could be wrong on this. But they are supposed to be in the vault, still unlocked. This is all bootleg, that they enhanced to some degree.

ROD my friend... You are... Always... Wrong... Always Wrong Rod... Always.

"The release will have 2 albums of unreleased
material & TWO concerts from the vault"

Boy did they lie too us..
Why did the release suddenly change
With 1 disc of unreleased songs &
Only one concert.
I'm very dissappointed with this news

Can't get enough of this track. Pure '83/84 Prince. Long may it rain (purple). Curious - anyone know if Susan Rogers had anything to do with the mastering of the unreleased tracks? EI sounds great.

They don't even have the balls to adress the matter in their amateurist press release; released 5 days after the leak of the news.

'The two-CD Purple Rain Deluxe set includes the official 2015 Paisley Park Remaster of the original tapes from the soundtrack, presenting an unheard vision of the album overseen by Prince himself.' This is interesting. Anyone else think we may get a vastly different version of the album? Jehovah's Witness Prince might have made some big changes to Darling Nikki for example.

This is all very exciting!

I'd always assumed that a 'studio' version of Electric Intercourse would be mastered from the live performance, like some of the other Purple Rain tracks. So it's great to have a different version. Having said that, the live version was killer!

Wonderful Ass is my jam so can't wait to hear a fully mastered version!

I'm with you - can't wait.

I'd be very suprised if the content of all 3 discs was not decided by anyone but Prince.

He clearly backed the project and was dipping back into the vault (I'm sure the 2014 performance of Electric Intercourse was no coincidence).

Contractually, the artist normally presents the work, and I very much doubt, with the current state of the estate that WB could release anything from the vault that wasn't already contractually sealed. They estate said they played no part in 4Ever and I doubt in PR.

I think Prince gave them finished packages of 4Ever and PR (possibly in Feb 2015). Maybe someone like Susan Rogers has been involved. She might do the liner notes.

Hey, at least being a hardcore fan won't lose its lustre, we still have to keep our copies of Work It.

What would be the most comprehensive outtakes collection currently?

I have The Work V2 but there is no traffic jam or more recent leaks. Any help much appreciated.

I don't think there's been a big comprehensive outtake collection that supersedes Work It 2.0, if you're looking for more recent stuff your best bet would probably be trying to find ripped copies of Eye Records' Blast From The Past series. There are 3 volumes and although they're certainly not great and mostly just rip off free releases they do compile the majority of new circulating stuff that you'd want.

I agree with you, even if it seems impossible to believe that a song with a title like "We Can Fuck" was actually chosen by P.

That said, I have to say that I don't undestand all this negativity for the set, and especially for the edits/mixes CD.
I, for one, I'm very happy to finally have "God (Instrumental)" and "Another Lonely Christmas (Extended)" on an official CD.

And we are talking of an archival box set, so the inclusion of any audio release linked to the era to me seems absolutely right.

But even accepting conceptually the negativity..... can we go on with all that after seeing the actual price the expanded deluxe will be sell?!?!?!?

Come on, I'd pay that price for the only second disc.

I was expecting prices a lot higher (look at the archival McCartney, to say one).... in this way it looks at a real bargain.

This is highly doubtful.

Prince's unreleased songs were his asset for future releases of his own album as an independant artist. He would have never sold it to WB.

And he would have never released tracks such as "Wonderfull ass" or "we can fuck", that's insane.

.

If he really gave to them the whole CD2, then WB would have never wait 3 years to release it, that's beyond ridiculous. It was even recently pushed back to june 16th, then now june 23th...

Once their contract with Prince was over, they had no interest in recertify Prince's catalogue.

.

As we've dropped from the expected 4CD/2DVD to 3CD/1DVD, I'm no longer expecting a "deluxe box" that will look awesome displayed on a shelf. Guessing the packaging will be minimal as well?

From the press release:

Six tracks that have never been released or distributed in the collector or bootleg community include: “Possessed” – the ’83 Prince solo version, never heard before; “Electric Intercourse”- the studio version not known to exist before it was discovered at Paisley Park; “Father’s Song” – a full, five plus minute version that prior to this fans could only find a minute and half snippet of in the movie; “We Can Fuck” – a track that has never circulated as the full, 10 minute version with these lyrics; and “Katrina’s Paper Dolls” – a finished master of the song, which has previously only circulated as a demo. Additionally, all of the material is taken from the source and mastered by Bernie Grundman, the mastering engineer who worked on the original album.

---

I'm looking forward to hearing all of CD 3.

Well, they listed 5 tracks and there is also as 6th "Love & Sex" that AFAIK isn't circulating in any version.

So "Velvet Kitty Cat" is exactly the same recently leaked?!?!?

Don't remember if it was from a press release, rumour, or if somebody here just pulled it out of their ass... but, pretty sure that's how it was being described at one point.

That said, so many different things have been said and so much has been wrong, so, whatevs... wink
