Brainstorming a mix for my two little nieces.. Hello and good morning! I have two nieces, one is 5, the other is 4. Both are enrolled in dance classes, and have already taken an extreme liking to music. They're both aware their Uncle Kyle is an extreme music head, and I promised them both one day to let them hear some cool stuff when they got a llittle older. I discovered Prince when I was their age, and IMHO I think its my duty to make them aware of who he is at a young age, as I hold him solely responsible for my love for all different kinds of music out there. So I wanna put together a mix for them. Having to sift through his catalog for music of his that's appropriate for children their age is a total challenge, but here's what I have so far. If this goes as well as I think it might, Prince is going to blow their young minds. And btw: My brother (father of the 4 year old) and sister (mother of the 5 year old) are both fans of P as well, and both have seen him live with me. They're not as batshit crazy about him like myself, but getting them to sign off on their brother giving their kids Prince music is something I'm sure I can do with ease. Please make suggestions! Here goes:
- Song of the Heart
- It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
- Partyman
- Alphabet St. (Ok, so we all know what the song is really about, but I think the alphabet and putting the right letters together to make a better day is fitting for kids.)
- Let's Go Crazy
- Baby I'm A Star
- Mountains
- High Fashion
- Strange Relationship
- Lets Work
- Get On The Boat

. Song Of The Heart is definitely a good one for kids, as well as Starfish And Coffee.
But to be honest, I would forget about most of the others on your list (OK, keep Let's Go Crazy), songs like "Beautiful Night" or "High Fashion" will bore kids to death.
I would go for songs with simple melodies that they can start sing along to, something like the chorus of Paisley Park (although its percussion- and effects-heavy sound won't go down well with children) – or ones that make them dance.
Why not try these (not in sequence): Raspberry Beret A Place In Heaven Starfish And Coffee 7 Courtin' Time
TicTacToe Like A Mack

Thank you! Starfish and Coffee was definitely one of the first ones that came to mind. However, something told me to keep it off since I want the songs to be drum-heavy, as well as very urgent to get their attention right away since the minds of children by and large tend to wander if something doesnt catch them. Pretty much, I want all upbeat stuff. Im thinking I can make an exception for it, though. Get in your mouse, and get out of here! |

Beautiful I tend to agree with, due to the length, even though it's absolutely one of my favorite songs. I was just saying to somebody else in a quote on here that Starfish was one of the first that came to mind, but my aim is to make the collection very heavy on drums, and songs that jump out at you right away. But the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards adding it. I think High Fashion might go down well with them, due to the weird wind instrument that starts it off and how the beat drops. I think it'll catch their attention, at least for the first half of the song before they get bored with it. I'm ok with that. Raspberry Beret was another that came to mind, but the lyrics are filthy and my sister will personally behead me if I put it on there, infectious as the chorus may be. 7 is a great choice. LOL never thought of Like A Mack. What do you think of 17 Days making the list? Get in your mouse, and get out of here! |

. I think 17 Days will bore them too. Generally, funk rhythms are multilayered and kids don't really get that. They'll get bored with Beautiful Night too – you can try it but I'm pretty sure they will. Try to forget about what your favourites are.
Like A Mack is a very contemporary sounding, fun song that I think would make them dance. I can imagine them happily dancing to Courtin' Time too.

FALLINLOVE2NITE, Love, Chelsea Rodger's and Chocolate Box.....are not Princes best song's by a mile..but they are extremley catchy, modern and easily digestible for kid's, I was also going to suggest Pop Life Fresh Dance Mix, but I forget about the "whats the matter with your sex..is fifteen minutes your best" line, maybe Right Back Here In My Arms from Emancipation?? Dolphin is a great song from Gold Experience.....everyone loves dolphins especially kids right?? |

I would add I Wish U Heaven to this. ETA: Like A Mack, like someone else mentioned, Funknroll (either the original or the remixed. I personally love the remixed. And since they're dancers, it'd probably appeal.) Aint About To Stop would also be awesome. [Edited 4/26/17 8:32am] I imagine myself inside your bedroom; oh, I imagine myself in your sky.
