oh wow...I've never seen this video. I can imagine how this would send Prince into a tizzy. thanks.
If I'm not mistake the riff with his father came in the latter 90s
At first I thought the vid would be someone scandelous. But it was actually pretty complimentary. Sharon really knew nothing about the women they talked about.
The problem started with this interview and escalated into Lorna saying she wrote U Got The Look. She claimed she showed the lyrics to John who then took to Prince. Apparently John got mixed up in the case and Prince stopped speaking to him for a while.
This all happen in the early 90s but there was still some talk about this when Prince.org was still just starting.
I was shattered to hear about the closet. It was baffling to me, because the only question I had was "where was his mother?" I'm sure young Prince had the same question. So very, very sad. I wonder if this man is alive and what he would say to explain himself.
Black culture during this period was one of a lot of 'color coding', meaning, lighter-complections were more acceptable in white culture. I wonder if Prince was met with jealousy by his stepfather for this reason? Or was Prince in the way of his relationship with Mattie? What could cause a man to be so cruel to just Prince?
Prince's step father was ligh complexioned as well. It seems his mother and father both dated/married only
other 'mixed' people
Don't be so hasty into thinking they only dated mixed people because of what you see. We don't really know that. People put me in this category all the time because of one ex-boyfriend that they saw and also my husband who is Italian. The assumptions couldn't be farther from the truth. We met, we fell in love, we are of different races. End of story. Doesn't mean I only date Italian men. Lol. Furthermore, his family don't even look mixed to me. Except for maybe the little kid. In all the pictures I've ever seen of Prince's father, he doesn't look like he's mixed at all. I doubt it was a conscious decision to search out a mixed person.

How far off is the thread from the target of Chapter 5?
Well Prince just got out of high school, and right now the conversation is in the 90's. LOL
Haha. Ok, I'll chime in. I did learn things I didn't know such as:
He finished high school. Don't know why, but for some reason I thought he hadn't and just got lucky things worked out for him. And for some reason the mom in me felt proud of him for sticking with school unlike his friend.
It seems the dude never had a job. Meaning, no crap high school job like the rest of us (pizza delivery, retail, yard work,babysitting...you know what I mean). This guy truly was blessed to do NOTHING but make and be surrounded by music his entire life.

I agree, but wait, he did have some yard work "dandelions", lol.

And are'nt we all grateful for that!
I love you baby, just not like I love this guitar.~Prince~

Did P actually walk accross the stage at graduation? Do any pictures exist? Or did he simply qualify for the diploma, but not attend the actual ceremony?

Sorry. I thought it might add to the discussion since the book doesn't get into the 90's but the clip does give people a better understanding of the family dynamics and the people involved (as discussed in Chapters 1 to 3), including John L.'s playing and what P would have heard in his home. The story of seeing his dad perform at the strip clubs also shows what P was exposed to in his formative years.

I don't know? I'd like to know if his Mom & Dad were there to see him graduate if he walked.

It's not a problem. What I'm wondering is, if it's true what his dad said, that P would come in the club and stand by the door to watch, why was the kid out so late, how did he get there, and why did his mom not know where he was?

Lol, true. Maybe his parents gave him some 'guilty' money here and there, and the book says Bernadette Anderson provided pretty well for him (bless her). He seems to have gone hungry from time to time, though (stealing food from a friend's house, standing outside McDonald's and smelling the food - I read the McDonald's story somewhere else).

Both good questions. I'd be curious to know this, too.
I don't know if this was asked before: will the authors, Alex and Laura, be working on a follow up to this book, since it only covers up until the Lovesexy era, if I'm not mistaken? Thanks.

We are not yet working on a follow-up although it certainly is a possibility in the future. First we are going to be promoting this book for a while, and getting our work and family lives back on track (or some semblance of it) after what was a very demanding year. Prince has a way of taking over one's life, as we all know!

I agree, it was smart of Prince to finish high school. There is something important about not leaving things unfinished in life, you know? About not having a crappy high school job like we all had, in 2014 he talked to Arsenio Hall about that. He said, “When I was 16 I was completely broke and I needed to find a job and got the yellow pages out, but couldn’t find one thing I wanted to do. So I decided I was going to push as hard to be a musician and win at it.”

It sounds like some of the things 12 yr olds would do as kids - sneak out of the house when eveyone was asleep. But I believe this harkens to an even younger time. Does P's description of his Mom (wild) mean that he was given the same lattitude by her?

It seems he would've been around 12 or so at the time in order to get to the club unaccompanied, unless one or more of his friends came with him, which wouldn't surprise me with that little motley crew, but this may have been some or one of the incidents that kept him in trouble with Hayward? I get the impression that his mom was a bit passive with him, but it sounds as in contrast to Johns serene demeanor, she was more ambitious and open, which Prince may have perceived as "wild". I'm thinking of that Chris Rock interview where he said his mom initiated him "heavy and quick" with the Playboy issues and other erotic literature when he was 10ish. A lot of it seems too much too soon. He didn't have the luxury of "discovery" and it's interesting that he would use the word "initiate".

Andre Cymone said they both went to the club to pick up allowances from their dads. He also said that he was very good at driving cars he hot -wired or borrowed from relatives. I suspect this may have been one of their means of transportation.

I actually think his spirit was broken. I think that he had trouble connecting with people on a deeply intimate level; with being vulnerable because of his abuse as a child. Couple that with mommy issues and you have a man who could never make a marriage work.

I hear you, and shattered is exactly the way to put it. Hearing the story reminded me of my own family story that as a 5-year-old, my great-grandmother was locked in a closet by her stepmother. Imagine doing that to a 5-year-old, knowing how scared of the dark children are, and how claustrophic and trapped and powerless they would feel. It makes me sick.
Art Erickson told me that he had a thousand kids in his summer camp programs and that every single one of them had a bad home situation, and that as bad as Prince's situation was, it was not even the worst. For a sensitive creative boy like Prince, being locked away and not protected by his own mother, and his father having abandoned them, had to be devastating. What should hearten us is that these punishments did NOT break his spirit. Far from it.
It's good to know that his spirit was not broken. I read a lot of comments saying Prince was 'broken.' I can only wonder if a licensed therapist would evaluate him as such. I say this only because I've been told that going through psychologically damaging stuff does not necessarily qualify someone as being 'broken'. I have often wondered how a therapist identifies someone as broken vs. psychologically damaged. Is there a textbook definition? (I'm not directing this question to you, Laura, I'm just thinking out loud)

I always found that kind of disturbing, really.
I remember him speaking about it with Travis Smiley. He talked about those types of items he found in her room and wondered if it was her way of talking to him about the birds and the bees, but I also wondered if she may have thought he was gay?

I dunno.
I think she simply had her private bedside drawer, most likely with her vibe and erotic literature, not expecting her nosey son to be creeping through her things when she wasn't around.
I don't think they were left there with the intention of him finding them.
I think he simply found them cuz he was nosey and after they were discovered, he now had information that he wasn't necessarily ready for and that made him curious about actual application of that new information.
Intuitively, I don't think his Mom would read him as gay. He doesn't read as gay. But I do think it's likely that if anyone wondered if he was gay, it might be his father, but even then I dunno.
