Why did Big Chick quit, & why did he sell this type of story? Did Prince try to sue him after the story hit?

This might help: Rollingstone 1989 The six-foot-six, 350-pound Huntsberry left his job in 1985, a victim of both bad press and a $1000-a-week cocaine habit. "Prince and me were really good friends, man," he says from his suburban home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. "I still love the guy like a son. Prince never did drugs, I'll tell you that right now, man. He was against them. But drugs became my whole life. I was so hooked that nothing else mattered, and eventually I told Prince that I didn't want the job anymore because all I wanted was to stay high."

WOW, thanks. And another friend stabs Prince in the back.

Prince supposedly wrote 'Old Friends 4 Sale' after this incident.

I've read that Prince kept Big Chick on the payroll for years, even after he had sold the story and refused to come back. [Edited 6/2/17 17:29pm]

Yes he did that on a number of occassions with associates who "left" in several ways.

If you consider the bigger picture, I think that was P's way of indirectly taking care of the families of those that left more than it was a way of directly taking care of the associate who left.

But P'll still get a bad rap for folks leaving.

sad

Chapter 22 ~ Prince & the Counterrevolution Pages 253-270

.

Prince started to explore other genres including Jazz.

.

Prince's relationship with Wendy & Lisa got stronger, while other band members were feeling excluded.

.

Prince was still dating Susannah M. and he realized that by dating her, she would go and talk to Lisa and Wendy about their relationship and P didn't like people getting into his private life.

.

Unknown to P, Mark Brown took a new band under his wing called Mazarati & began playing with them, he had to keep his face covered and called himself the Shadow. Brown was afraid to tell P but finally did. Prince thought he might have a new side project and went and listened to the band. He encouraged Mark B, to release it's first record on Paisley Park's label. Brown agreed but was afraid he'd lose control of the group. Prince would often jump on stage and perform with Mazarati, he was also telling them how to dress. He was slowly taking control.

.

Prince gave Mazarati the song "Kiss", told them to finish it off, they reworked the song when P heard the new song, he loved it, and took it back from them. Credit for the song was contested. He did give David R an arrangement credit and that was all the credit he gave.

.

Prince was looking for locations to film another movie, and he went to Paris. He decided to shoot Under the Cherry Moon, there. Prince wanted the movie in black and white, he and WB came to an agreement and filmed it in color but transferred it to black & white. He hired Jerome Benton, he wanted Susannah to play the lead but the studio didn't like that and hired Kristin Scott Thomas.

.

Prince and his entourage flew to Paris and were in a fine mood. Susannah M was with him and apparently wearing an engagement ring. Prince gave Susannah a ring and she misinterpreted it as a marriage proposal. When they got to the hotel in France, Prince instructed Alan Leeds to escort Susannah back to the States, to MN, he didn't want her going to LA to cry on Wendy and Lisa's shoulder. With Susannah gone, France became P's playground with women and he would also have SheilaE and Jill Jones visit him.

.

Prince decided to take the helm of the movie and the actor Terrance Stamp quit, there were lots of problems filming this movie.

.

2 different endings were shot for the final scene of the movie.

.

Prince invited more people to join the Rev. which didn't go over to well. Leeds started calling the Rev, the counterrevolution.

.

I would say that I'm shocked about the new info that Prince gave Susannah Melvoin a ring and she misinterpreted it for an engagement ring, meaning they were never really engaged. I always thought they were legitimately engaged, but since I can attest to all the wrong info in regards to Vanity in this book, like how the song "The Beautiful Ones" was actually inspired by her (as per Prince) but wasn't updated... Like how she left Prince to sign with Berry Gordy (as per JJ and countless other people) but instead this book says she was fired... Like how she actually met Rick James at the AMA (as per Vanity herself) but instead this book says she showed up "on the arms of Rick James..." Like how this book tried to diminish her relationship with Prince, but instead Prince actually said he used to love her deeply...

Anyway, I digress. The contradictions makes it difficult for me to believe anything said in this book to be honest. Didn't Jill Jones say that Prince told her that he had to get engaged to SM? How would anyone even know what took place between them on the night he gave her the engagement ring? How would they know if the woman misinterpreted the meaning? lol. How would anyone even know what took place with some of the things said about Prince and Vanity's relationship for that Matter? From what I gathered, no one really knows when Prince and Vanity even met each other. I digressed again.. (Sorry, rant over now...) Can you tell this isn't my favorite book yet? lol

Either that or for public image purposes? Remember Jill said that Prince had public and private relationships. Anyway, I found that comment odd too. I don't know what it meant.

Could be Prince told JJ he had to get engaged because that is what would keep JJ around for when he wanted her around for sex or whatever. Prince was a player, he liked having lots of women at his beck and call. He told lies to the various women and said whatever he had to say to keep them around and happy enough to meet his needs. He probably told Susannah JJ was just "a friend".

Jill was with Prince before he became international superstar and I believe her.

Mr. Hahn did not even bother to change the facts proven wrong by Prince himself. That is wrong and I do not knowwhy he did not even provide a disclaimer for things that were proven to be wrong over the years. His info due to that may not always valid.

There was a SoundCloud interview in which she describes the ring Prince bought her and how he proposed. The ring was 6 carats and pear shaped. They bought it in NYC. The story sounded like the proposal to was a concellation prize for being fired from the film.

My point was proven by Susannah Melvoin's comment in that interview. JJ comment is just additional reinforcement and doesn't need to be taken as gospel. The point I was making about what Jill Jones said about the engagement to Susannah Melvoin was to show that even JJ (his other woman) had known that they were engaged due to Prince telling her so. Therefore, contradicting the book's account that SM misinterpreted the meaning of the ring. I would think the last thing JJ would do would be to make up a story about SM and Prince being engaged. If you're inclined to believe the actual people involved... recent accounts from podcasts by SM explaining the engagement, Albert Magnoli reiterating that Vanity had quit the movie, the rerelease book "Blame It On Vanity" where Denise spelled out excactly how she met Prince-how they felt about each other, and how she eventually walked away, and Prince tribute to vanity at the P&M tribute show where he shared his sentiments about how much they loved each other and his relationship with her. The key players have given us a more substantial account than the hearsay that's littered in this book.

The very first account being from Prince himself in the Dec 22, 2016 article when he single handedly squashed two of the rumors in one short sentence "TBO you always seem to loose, Vanity had just quit the movie." He just told us that vanity inspired the song TBO as well as she was the one to leave and that she wasn't fired. He did it again when he revisited who inspired the song on the P&M tour. Coupled with the JJ interview, (and it would seem the authors themselves take her word as gospel since they used her as a reference (except it appears that they left out the things she said that would contradict what was written in the prior book "Possessed") it's hard not to come to the realization that this book wasn't updated in a way that would justify it as a factual book to be taken seriously.

The beginning of the book with the genealogy of Prince was where the book stood out the most. I'll be gracious there, but the proof is clear that this book has a few (okay a lot) of misconceptions.. I personally don't see any reason for Jill Jones to lie about Vanity leaving Prince or SM and Prince being engaged. Since it coincides with other factors and accounts along with the accounts of the individuals involved (Prince,Vanity and Susannah!) Its hard NOT to take her word as truth. I mean, people can decide for themselves. Do they feel comfortable believing hearsay from an unknown source, or from the actual people involved? Even if they don't believe Jill Jones... They have to believe Vanity...No? Even if they don't believe Vanity... Surely they believe Prince... Right? If you don't believe with such compounding evidence, why bother believing anyone? The whole point would be moot...
