It's something you have to do so you don't repeat outfits or looks too close together. With someone as perfectionist as Prince was having swatches is essential so the look is consistent during the period you use it. In addition, I'm not sure how long or consistently his clothing makers stayed with him. The minute someone else steps in, they'd need a reference to understand what was done before.

This is impressive. And just as important as the guitars over the years.

David Bowie saved tons of stuff from his career, some of which can be found in the impressive Bowie Is... museum exhibit touring the world. Bowie got to got to see it before he passed on.

He might have been envisioning Paisley turning into a museum for a long time, so he knew all those costumes and other artefacts will become valuable assets.

Also, just as he was archiving every recording in the vault, possibly for future releases (and I'm convinced he wanted his heirs to eventually release it all), he knew the importance of holding onto old gear when it comes to prepare a new release. Almost every single record company maintaining an archive regularly runs into the problem of not having the proper gear for some old tapes (or any other formats) anymore. There can be huge differences between two tape recorders and sometimes it is very important to find the particular model a tape was recorded with.

Keeping old instruments is also important if you ever want to go back to an old song and rerecord it, or simply if you feel like creating something new using those oldschool sounds.

Prince of course was one of the very few in the position of being able to hold onto all this stuff, being wealthy enough throughout his entire career – while most professional musicians, often the most famous ones too, usually go through periods in their later life when they are forced to downsize and sell anything they can.

Verrry true. I still have nearly all of the gear that I've used over the years (synths, drum machines, modules, etc.). I have also held onto most all of my guitars and basses.

It's not just for the sounds for new music, but also if I want to pull something outta my "vault".

It's my belief he did indeed look back, just behaved and spoke like he did not. Perhaps it was a way of dealing with certain things. Or, at least, he did not look back to things that hurt him (parents, son, failed marriages, etc), everything else he wa ok with. Specially if he was planning on making a museum out of PP. That's not only looking to the past but also celebrating the past.

These are not flats, they have a transparent wedge. I never saw him wearing flats, there was always a wedge of sorts.

Makes one wonder if he had so many clothes why wear the same green turtleneck, green pants & white emancipation jacket on the Rosie show, Tower show in Philly, Boston & Wash shows, Muppet show and Chris Rock interview.....I remember a girl asking me " does he ever change his clothes?????"

Funny you should mention that... I thought those clothes didn't suit him at all. The whole fur waistcoat was awful.

I loved the tunics with the prints, though. With the long necklaces and the wedges.

The 7000 number is not 5% of what he had. He had an estimated 7000 pieces of clothing. Only 5% has been fully archived to date. The rest is being stored properly awaiting the full process. I think this is what she said in the other article about the same thing in the Star Tribune.

Andy Warhol had an entire warehouse full of boxes he labelled with each date and stored all the mail he randomly got that day (including junk mail). He called the Time Capsules.

Not offended but some of the exhibits with clothes were already together. The interior designer who work on some of this showed some pic on Facebook. Prince sent out plans to a lot of people and the Graceland people found detailed plans.

Does anyone think he would have been able to catalogue all of this stuff himself, record music and tour?

Dave Hampton the engineer said he made that room for Prince and organized the videos for him.

It was a private screening room. This was discussed on one of the Funkenberry podcast. Dave said it was not a secret just a nice room to look at the concerts. We all know he used the recorded concerts like game tape to watch back and review.

I wish the Graceland people would talk to some of the people he worked with.

He wasn't a hoarder. He was a man who had a strong sense of his own purpose and significance. He knew that pretty much everything he touched was going to be important long after he was gone - and had the means, space and good sense to hang onto everything. Bless him for it.

They did kind of look like orthopedic shoes but I loved it- I thought it was adorable and I was glad he was letting himself be comfortable. And still looked hot.

Of course pain or regret can cause one to not look back at certain things or whole periods, but we still do
