Why this song was not a hit I don't know. I think this was one of P's last brilliant songs he wrote.

There are two different versions. The one I heard on the album sounds like a remix on Art Official Age. Then there is the one on PLECTRUM ELECTRUM WITH 3rd Eye Girl.

The first one I heard was the version from the AOA album, now that I've heard the 3rd Eye Girl version I am thinking that was the orignal and the AOA was almost like a remix or second version.

I love them both. One is a club mix which I feel should of been a hit for P. The other is so amazing too, just live band free and slamming it as he always did.

Which version came first?

Was he the only producer on the AOA version? Sounds like someone came in and helped remix it with Prince still involved.

I wonder this every single time I listen to this song! It should have been a hit. I feel the same way about RNR Love Affair as well. Damn shame as those songs should have rocked the charts. Not sure which came first though, sorry

RnR Love Affair was good too. Just feel like all these other artist had big come backs and Prince had some shining moments in the last 10 years, but radio never caught on.

I know P didn't care about this, but FunknRoll should of been a hit.

I like both FunknRoll versions too.

I agree completely. It should have been. Heck, every time I hear it I am like HOW is this not on the radio right now, it's still that hot of a beat. Too bad someone with some sense wouldn't re-'release' this one and/or RNR Love Affair and get some attention to those albums. Maybe gain some new fans Keep the legacy and the music going

I agree they should re-release this song in honor of P.

Does anybody know if the "other" remix was played over the PA before or after any circulating shows? I don't think I've heard that one.

I love this song. both versions. It's absolutely brilliant and love all the nuances on it. The horns and the synth... This track makes me put it on repeat every time.

Never understood the hate for the remixed version on AOA.
I love the unapologetic Daft Punk / EDM spirit of it.
That neurotic bridge, now there's a "Grand Progression" of chords.

Exactly. I did look at the Vault and it appears the AOA version was a remix and the boyfriend of the drummer Co-produced it. Good stuff.

With promotion, it could have been a decent hit.

I am obsessed with all the songs on AOA and it is on rotation in my car.

Because it was overshadowed by the amazing Wow and lovely Whitecaps?

Some argue that "Affirmation I & II", "Way Back Home" and "Affirmation III" should have been presented in a seamless sequence, but I disagree.

The inclusion of "Funknroll" between "Way Back Home" and "Time" is a very good application of contrast. Both mid-tempo songs would not have the same impact if "Funknroll" wasn't there to shake things up one last time, before the album closes on a slower, meditative mood. It reminds me of the 'shocking' quality that "Play In The Sunshine" has, coming right after the seriousness of "Sign O' The Times".

I agree with you bonatoc about the sequencing. I don't know all the musical terms off the top of my head, but many great works of music get away from the main theme (musically and lyrically)and then return back to in the finale with great effect!

And what about the reprises scattered all over the album ? Almost every song contains an echo to another. I'm thinking about Andy singing "Time — keep bringing me down, down, down" in the ad lib of "Time". But they are all over the place. The songs nod to each other.
You have the hostess breaks, the nod to the SuperBowl opening the record,
now that's some humour and self-deprecation: our Christopher as we know it.
What a great album.

I love this song so much I use it as my ringtone. Also remember it was used in an epsidoe of EMPIRE
