It means add the note. .
like "G (add A) means a G major chord (G B D) and also play an A so the chord is G-A-B-D. .
In reality You might now play all 4 notes stacked that way, depends how you voice it (I play keyboards; not sure how you say this for guitar). For example you might only play a G, an A and D though technically that would be considered a Sus2 chord.
