Looks like an album of instrumental covers--this Songrise Orchestra is credited with a whole bunch of other instrumental cover albums for lots of artists (Pet Shop Boys, Springsteen, and on and on). So, it's legimately what it is, an album of covers. It's not a Prince record, if that's what you're asking. And it's probably not particularly fun to listen to (though I haven't heard it). Just some folks playing some Prince tunes, presumably in an orchestral way. |

I'm pretty sure I bought that CD about 20 years ago. Also around the same period there were lots of "Unauthorised CD's" being sold in CD shops, at least in Australia. |

I may be wrong but I don't think you need permission to release a cover, royalties just have to be paid.
More importantly it was the 90's and a low key release like this was likely just going to go unnotticed, there was little internet out there so everyone couldn't jump on releases the moment they came out.
I'd say it was probably pressed once, a drop in the ocean amid ever increasing cd sales, if Prince even became aware of it it'd be months or years later and whatever copies that were made were already out there. It wouldn't be worth anyone's time chasing it, least of all the authorities.
It was a lot easier for Prince to pounce with a cease and desist in the latter days of his career when the entire music climate had changed.

No approval is necessary for a cover--just payment. |
