I'd have to say MJ owned 1983, because Thriller came out December 1982. Of course The Victory Tour in 1984 kept him, and the brothers, on the map. But I tell ya - come May, June, & July, it was "Michael who?" LOL

michael did, but prince was on his ass, michael lost a lot of fans in 84. Some of us were either or, I always was a huge fan of both and Bruce the other megastar of the time. Not too many are major fans of all 3.

Yeah, I definitely had a foot in both camps w/ MJ & Prince. And as a note about Victory, it was the Thriller craze that sold any of those records. MJ wasn't in the "Torture" or "Body" video, and it is known now that he didn't even really want to be on the album. I dig the record, but they didn't even perform those songs on the tour. Prince definitely timed Purple Rain just right, whether conscious or not of the fact that Thriller was coming to an end of its run. He hit when the iron was hot.

Controversy...on the radio, either late 81 or early 82...I was 7 years old. I really liked the song but my cousin loaned me the vinyl LP and it went over my little head. When 1999 dropped in late 82...it was ALL OVER...hooked like a fish!

victory was savaged by the critics but I really liked it, body, torture, One more chance, solid album Phil collins ripped off one more chance and had a hit with it. Much has been made of michael going back to his brothers, whether he should have or not for the tour, I don't know, it doesn't really matter, he was the star and he went on to do a couple more tours without them. Also, he must have liked them in some respect because he always had backup in vids and on stage.

for his part, Prince took a longer break than usual between albums to up his stage game, make the movie and when he hit, it's still hard to believe just how great he was. Michael really took too damned long between albums. no doubt, worried about sales.

I dug most of the album, as well. I still can't make out what Randy is singing on "The Hurt", and "We Can Change The World" is horrid. I lived for "State of Shock" and "Be Not Always".

Phil definitely did rip "One More Night" from "One More Chance". I'm surprised there was never a lawsuit on that. PS There is a video of that final L.A. Victory show where MJ says the tour is over, during a song. The brothers look shell-shocked through it all. Most of the family comes on stage, then MJ jets. hahaha

Back to the topic, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was such a perfect pop song back then. It's no wonder so many latched on when they first heard it.

Probably was 1999 for me... living in the Twin Cities, I honestly think that might have been the first song that ever got played on WLOL or KDWB, which were the only stations you could get in those days that might play Prince. (Can't recall if KMOJ existed at that point, but if it did, the reception was too poor to receive in St. Paul where I lived until the 1990s.)

It was probably Erotic City.... it would be blasting during crazy neighborhood parties when I was a kid. Then the Batman soundtrack came along and I remember liking some of the tunes. (except arms of orion - i was a kid)

It tooks years for the reemergence of P in my life. Started shortly after I was of age to get "allowance" and buy cds. I think my first Prince cd was Chaos and Disorder, along with "Old Friends for Sale", then followed by Purple Rain, Parade, Graffiti Bridge, Emancipation....and the rest I cannot remember chronologically.

Odd because my family wasn't a Prince family....though I DO remember seeing the Self Titled album in my Aunt's (she moved) lp collection....even BEFORE hearing anything....it struck me as odd...and I thought "this must be something disco" (aunt liked disco)

1999 was the first Prince song I heard. But When Doves Cry was THE song that made me a fan. It was only after buying Purple Rain did I really go back and listen to 1999. I would skip the songs that had explicit lyrics if my parents were home. I would listen to the whole thing if they weren't.

That's so interesting to me. I was born & raised in the buckle of the bible belt, so when I happened across Dirty Mind in the record store, and saw that rudimentary warning label on it with him in such a sexually raw pose, it was like seeing the devil. Everything not God-centered back then was just evil and wrong and sinful.

So when I finally heard things like "Jack U Off" and "Let's Pretend We're Married" as a teenager, I started to find my rebel inside. I realized that it wasn't so bad, and I started to learn about just being free. When I say Prince's music really meant something to me, it runs deep. I only wish I'd found the energy & strength from that to come out way sooner than what I did, and to pursue the one dream I had in life. But - in time, all things happen for a reason I suppose.

it was a distinctive song for the time but that made way less an impression than the little bizarre act he did on bandstand, immediately, that made him memorable forever. the whole family was "what is wrong with him" I said "he's either gay, high, crazy or all three". Little did I know that guy would change my life.

Yes, I first heard the song on the radio and then saw him on AB too. The song pulled me in, the bandstand scene made me yield, and subsequently Dirty Mind made me put the pedal to the metal .

i know i heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on the radio and on Different Strokes in 1980

and i'm pretty sure i heard "Controvery" and "Sexuality" as well in 1982

but it wasn't until 7th grade when i saw the videos for "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" in 1983 that i took note and had to own everything he ever did

I Wanna Be Your Lover . Then the full album of Dirty Mind it was my sister's album. Was too young to understand the lyrics then My sister said i was playing air guitar with a broom

Soft & Wet on the radio, along with the story he was 19 and played all the instruments on the song.

The Batman soundtrack, actually, is the one that stands out for me. I probably heard other stuff before that, but that stood out, mostly because that particular Batman movie was my favorite.
