Glamorous Life 'Re-Recorded': What's the deal? Heard this on Pandora.
Sounded like Sheila's vocals but all the instruments re-done. Very close to the original I must say in terms of the arrangements and little notes and motifs, but not with vintage insruments or by Prince so still doesn'tsound "quite right".
But why did they do this? And how would they get Sheila's vocals?

I'm not finding the Glamorous Life re recorded
it just goes to In My House
To start things off, here's a song that's musically similar to "The Glamorous Life (Re-Recorded)" called "In My House" by Mary Jane Girls, that features:

It could be just a different recording before the final released version.
Some of it sounds like the one with prince on lead vocals with Jill on backing vocals.

Sorry. That link was to my Pandora channel for PRince (where it played).
Here is a youtube version. not sure it's the one i heard. Listening again the vocals are someone trying to sound like Sheila I think.
I'm still struck how well they re-created the backing tracks. They are pretty intricate synth arrangements. I try to re-create them when my band plays them but I'm hte only keyboard player

nah. I hae the Prince demo. It uses the same instruments (with fewer effects) as the released version. Maybe a different drum sound but you can tell it's what was later released. without Sheia's percussion.

U don't think it could just be another take of the song from then ?

No. It says it was "re-recorded" so I think it was done recently
Moreover it doesn't have the 80s vintage feel. Its hard to explain. It's the difference between a synthesizer or drum machine made now that is trying to sound like the 80s vs, an actual vintage one.
I'ts def not by Prince. Does't have the sound f his production which even the leaked demo did.
How they got the rights I wonder?

This sounds like one of those "in the style of" CD's that you can find extremely cheap at places like Wal-Mart. If you listen closely it's not the same backing track, though it is damn close. I don't believe that is Sheila singing either. I know many people that have been fooled by those type of CD's.

Still the same song with Prince on backing vocals throughout the track it just sounds like they added some strange reverb to it which makes it sound like it's not upfront and present like it should be and it sounds pretty crappy quite frankly The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
Remember there is only one destination and that place is U All of it. Everything. Is U.

That is definately Sheila E on vocals, if you check out some performances by Sheila in 1984/85 with the song it is the exact same voice. And that is still Prince on backing vocals(and Jill in there somewhere)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I have to disagree. it is not the same insruments and I don't think it's Sheila's voice (I did the 1st time).
I have an mp3 of the original that leaked. it is very different.
plus it says "re-recorded". how would an 80's compilation get access to a P outtake??

i thought it was SHeila too at first but when I listened again it sounded like someone trying to sound like her. Like you said, her intonations are different.

- Sheila on lead vocals, going to a certain length to approximate the necessary camp/vamp of the original. - Prince, however, is not on backing vocals. - Faithfully reproduced arrangement, but production has that plasticy 'maximizing royalties' karaokesque quality to it typical of 're-recorded' versions found on streaming sites and discount compilation CDs. -With the exception of the sax, most likely created on 1990s-2010s era workstation/vst/soft synth/cubase/Logic Studio gear (not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that), rather than the carefully considered warm vintage analog gear. - This is audiophonic clickbait, just slightly better executed than most of its variety. This is just my speculation after listening to it: She re-recorded it for the same reason Prince re-recorded his stuff. Sheila probably wanted to own the master. Who knows what kind of deal she had in 1984. She might have signed away her rights to the original version. She once owed big money to WB. This new version might be solely owned by her, and then only has to pay the songwriting fees. That being said, it's just my speculation. It could be that some shady "Back The 80s" record company approached her and asked her to lend her vocals to their recording of the song, then THEY would get all the cash. That's happened to many older acts. Sheila might be able to clear this up

Very simply, it's a way for the artist to retain a master of the recording for extra money. A lot of these 80's and 90's hits have been rerecorded for the same reason. Pretty much the same reason that Prince re-recorded "and re-released 1999", but at a much lesser scale.

In the past,I have (accidentally) purchased a few 'best of' CDS from certain artists, where the songs have been re-recorded.I was angry Give me the original versions or nothing at all!

I once bought a 3-CD box set of 70s hits and it was only $10.99.I thought 'wow, this is a bargain'.
When I got home and listened to it,I discovered exactly why it was so cheap. All of the songs were not the original songs. It was all re-recorded

This is so that the artist can recieve their own royalties imo. Klymaxx, Lisa Lisa and even Loose Ends have re-recorded tracks out there Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

So it was something done in 1984 and a legit part of the musical canon?

IDK. Prince gave her 50% I think of the songwriting, didn't he? Wasn't she listed at ASCAP? She said in interview the song made her a millionaire..... could the record sales alone have done that?? . . Plus, I doubt Sheila would've done anything shady vs. just asking Prince. Plus her stuff has alwys been avaialble on digital channels (as well as the Time's) even though Prince wrote it.. .
I hace to listen again but i really think it's someone trying to sound like her. . . I was more impressed with how faithfully they re-crerted the bcking tracks given how intricate some of those synth layers are.

The rights are acquired through the same means as used by the makers of karaoke and 'sound-alike' collections. A vast portion of his popular catalogue has long been authorized for such use. To release such a track certainly wouldn't necessitate any direct approval or blessing, based on the massive scale of the substandard rubbish out there. . [Edited 4/18/17 17:01pm]
