The Katrina name in the title is a reference to Vanity, who's full name was Denise Katrina Matthews.

Also, it was recorded in October/November 1983 at the Kiowa Trail home studio.

And Vanity liked paper dolls...

It was reworked into "Bob George."
Bob, ain't that a bitch?

But is there any link to that Joy or Paisley Park Instrumental track that leaked a while back?

The only version I can see on YouTube is indeed the "Paisley Park" Instrumental (putting the quotes in since it sounds nothing like the released song Paisley Park) that the OP is referencing, otherwise known as Joy. I don't think the actual Katrina's Paper Dolls is circulating. Really strange and evocative track title though, I'm very curious to see what it sounds like come the release of Purple Rain Deluxe, although I feel with that weird title it's likely to be an instrumental, but I don't really have anything to bar that on, just idle speculation l. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Atmospheric, dark, moody, very synth heavy (In fact its all synths and drum machines). The song is about a woman(Katrina) whos man been gone for so long she makes a paper doll for each and every day, Comes to the realization that "Love's just a game and its so insane" but "Baby that what makes the world go round"

Big Chick "Security Ensuring Thee" You've really piqued my curiosity now... Are those the synths from Joy? I can't see how you can build a song around them, but who knows. [Edited 4/19/17 18:08pm]

. I MASSIVELY agree! . The studio version of Electric Intercourse is simply off the scale! But the live version will forever be special as it catches the moment beautifully (as does A Case Of U). . On another point, I'm amazed that we even now we still hear of tracks that no one ever knew about! .

The name did run across my mind for a second, but since I'd never heard it and it seemed unattainable, I never dwelled on it long enough to solidly put two and two together on the "Katrina" part. Cannot wait to hear this! Makes that Purple Rain Deluxe even more exciting. As a Prince/Vanity enthusiast, this is the stuff dreams are made of! , lol... [Edited 4/20/17 6:39am]

There are (at least) 4 versions:
1 - Cole Colemans original version with Prince - Years ago I asked Wendy and Lisa about this version because I didn't recognise the unknown woman recording this with Prince and they (or Lisa actually) confirmed it was her sister and originally her song...
2 - Prince's finished version of the track above.
3 - Prince's re-recorded version.
4 - Prince's completely reworked version. (Which is the best)

It's probably as close to the version coming on PR deluxe as the Baby I'm a Star demo is to the completed album version, so I don't really see why anyone had to mention it at all Bitch this ain't the movies

i wondered what the big deal about it was, as ive heard a snippet and it doesnt sound too overwhelming. but it does sound really dark and eerie. im interested in hearing the full version, so i can make a proper judgement if i like it or not eye dont think U heard me . . .
