It's on youtube, Katrina was Vanity's middle name.

The Katrina name in the title is a reference to Vanity, who's full name was Denise Katrina Matthews.

Also, it was recorded in October/November 1983 at the Kiowa Trail home studio.

The only version I can see on YouTube is indeed the "Paisley Park" Instrumental (putting the quotes in since it sounds nothing like the released song Paisley Park) that the OP is referencing, otherwise known as Joy. I don't think the actual Katrina's Paper Dolls is circulating. Really strange and evocative track title though, I'm very curious to see what it sounds like come the release of Purple Rain Deluxe, although I feel with that weird title it's likely to be an instrumental, but I don't really have anything to bar that on, just idle speculation l.

Atmospheric, dark, moody, very synth heavy (In fact its all synths and drum machines). The song is about a woman(Katrina) whos man been gone for so long she makes a paper doll for each and every day, Comes to the realization that "Love's just a game and its so insane" but "Baby that what makes the world go round"

Big Chick

You've really piqued my curiosity now... Are those the synths from Joy? I can't see how you can build a song around them, but who knows.

BigChick knows what he is talking about biggrin

I would say like a cross between "God" and "The Beautiful Ones" with a fuck-ton of reverb.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the "Joy" track which is actually an instrumental called "Paisley Park Instrumental" (but has nothing to do with the song Paisley Park). Someone mislabelled that to get YouTube hits.

For me, Electric Intercourse and We Can Fuck will be the highlights. Have dreamed of a studio verion of Electric Intercourse since the mid 80's.

I MASSIVELY agree!

.

The studio version of Electric Intercourse is simply off the scale! But the live version will forever be special as it catches the moment beautifully (as does A Case Of U).

.

On another point, I'm amazed that we even now we still hear of tracks that no one ever knew about!

.

lol lol lol lol

Amen on the live stuff, whenever I hear either of those songs, my mind moves back to Prince at that piano in 83 under the blue light.

I've heard of the song. The name did run across my mind for a second, but since I'd never heard it and it seemed unattainable, I never dwelled on it long enough to solidly put two and two together on the "Katrina" part. Cannot wait to hear this! Makes that Purple Rain Deluxe even more exciting. As a Prince/Vanity enthusiast, this is the stuff dreams are made of! lol, lol...

There are (at least) 4 versions:

1 - Cole Colemans original version with Prince - Years ago I asked Wendy and Lisa about this version because I didn't recognise the unknown woman recording this with Prince and they (or Lisa actually) confirmed it was her sister and originally her song...

2 - Prince's finished version of the track above.

3 - Prince's re-recorded version.

4 - Prince's completely reworked version. (Which is the best)

So what does it sound like? It seems it will be on the "Purple Rain" Deluxe CD, so just be patient...

This jam version you are all talking about is no where near the finished studio version. It's probably as close to the version coming on PR deluxe as the Baby I'm a Star demo is to the completed album version, so I don't really see why anyone had to mention it at all

Plus the fact that that version isn't the only jam/rehearsal version of the song...
