BTW, Has Prince ever tour Africa?

Yes, it's a serious question. I want to know if Prince ever did shows, concerts, and/or after parties in certain African countries? hmmm

No, never. Purely based on my own experience, I'd say he didn't have an audience there. I once had a penpal from Zimbabwe (this was before the internet) who told me that Prince wasn't popular there at all. I've been to Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia and I heard a Prince song only once, in tourist disco. You see and hear Bob Marley everywhere, but Prince... No.

There's a good site for that: https://sites.google.com/...urhistory/

But I'm going with "no" as a base answer.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No. unfortunately not. But it appears he has been to Ethiopia and Morocco and was facinated by the music in both places.

The wooh is on the one!

Zambian here! And I think i am the only fan in the country.... He could have done well in South Africa, a lot of performers from the western world perform there and do well. Alas, he never did... In sub Sahara Africa RnB and Hip Hop rule the air waves. Nothing else gets a look in really. Having said that, my local pub has a LOT of Prince music as I compile the playlists, so at least there is one small pub in the middle of Africa that gets it.

A cinema here in Toronto screened a film that was basically the Nigerian version of Purple Rain, and I saw the trailer for it. I don't recall the title, but the english translation was essentially: "Rain, Blue, With a Bit of Red In It". lol

I found the trailer, but I don't know how to embed it properly!

Strange, as Michael went to Africa in 1992 and then again in 1997 when he played a History Concert there. Apparently MJ was also there in 1974, in Senegal where they filmed a moviecalled Isomin Cross and Son (At Goree Island, an old slave fort).

.

I imagine he must have been quite popular in South Africa, as my vinyl copy of Graffiti Bridge was pressed by a group called "Tusk Records" in South Africa and the pressing was identical to western ones. Whereas on the French collector site Sleevographia, the records pressed in other African countries like Zimbabwe look very cheap and amatuerish like the Central American ones.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Yes this. It is a wonder that the music of these places did not inspire new sounds in his music in my humble opinion. The closest I have found to the N African influence is NPG's show cover of Sting's (featuring Cheb Mami) Desert Rose. Ethiopia is a fascinating country. Peace.

Zimbabwe is the only country besides the US where PURPLE RAIN (the album) hit #1.

I have friends from Gabon, and there PURPLE RAIN and KISS were huge hits, still popular today.
