Reality...we fans think in albums and eras....in the studio it always much more fluid and didn't become a 'thing' until it nailed on as a release. .

. And it got shelved because Prince was upset that Blackwell got sick of waiting and went on tour with D'Angelo. © Bart Van Hemelen

In a Dr Funkenberry podcast with Adrian Cruthfield they said Black Is The New Black was more like an EP of 6/7 songs, incl Ruff Enuff, that he was going to put on Tidal. . IIRC Revelation came from the NPGQ sessions but at the AOA/PE release party it was instrumental stuff they were playing.

that book also says there is a recording of the full Family album with Prince vocals

No, Black is the new Black is a album not a ep They knew of 8 tracks that was completed. They said prince might have done more tracks himself. The ep was separate

I always got the impression that the NPGQ material was recorded as part of the Phase 2 work, over a couple of years.
The Black is the new black work was seperate and unfinished.
According to one of the more senior and knowlegable tour guides at PP, he said the last material being recorded (and studio A remains set up in situ) was definately for a jazz album, with the players behind Ruff Enuff. .

The next official release was supposed to have been the Piano tour live CD. . I only hope Prince's plans are kept in place and we do see this released next. .

To be honest, I believe next in line was "Hit'nRun phase III". He released two singles related to this one.

Exactly, although I'm pretty sure the version of Ruff Enuff that was available on Tidal was a demo. I'm sure his own version with vocals was to come out on Phase III. He stated on twitter that song went well with Free Urself. And Free Urself was confirmed to be on Phase III by the man himself.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course he changed his mind/plans all the time but he also tweeted there was no plans for a Phase III at one point. . There was also an instrumental version of Ruff Enuff on Tidal so that could have been intended for Black Is The New Black for all we know. . The most apt release probably would have been the last Piano & Mic show from Atlanta he said wanted to release and was reportedly getting mixed at the last Paisley party
