New Unreleased Song Called "Play"

Hi,

Maybe I missed this song before but just heard a new unreleased song called "Play". Sounds like it could have been recorded within the last 5 years or so. Sounds fantastic!

can you give us a few lyrics, so we can see if this is a known outtake (there is a song by
that name or a variation of the name, dating back to 1990) or something else.

"Play" has definitely been around for at least 20 years. I remember getting it in the Napster days. It was probably on CD boots pre-internet. If it's the one from 1990, here's more from Princevault:

Play (a.k.a. U Want Me 2 What?) is an unreleased track recorded in September or October 1990, at Larrabee Sound, Los Angeles, CA, USA during recording sessions for the New Power Generation maxi-single (during the same set of sessions as the N.P.G. (Funky Weapon Remix), T.C.'s Rap, Tony’s Iggnant Mix, Get Off, The Lubricated Lady, Loveleft, Loveright, a segue later included in the N.P.G. (Funky Weapon Remix), Oobey Doop, Heaven Is Keeping Score, and additional recording on My Tree and A Positive Place).

The song opens with Robin Power saying "you want me to what?" (also used in Number One and New Power Generation (Pt. II)). It was included as the eleventh track (tenth song) on an October 1990 configuration of the New Power Generation maxi-single. It was included (as U Want Me 2 What?) as the seventh song on another October 1990, configuration, but the track was removed from the final release, and the track remains unreleased.

A lot of his music around this time was canned and kitschy. It sounds really dated, and it was upsetting to hear Prince really follow a trend in late 80s music. When people talk about following trends, it was around the Graffiti Bridge time he really started to do that. "Play" is one of those tracks. It's a repetitive in that other tracks noted above have a very similar sound. For me, it's not a favorite.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

I don't think we are talking about the same song. The song starts out with Prince saying "Can you come outside and play?" and he screams the word play. It is an uptempo song. Some lyrics are:

Can ucome outside and play?

Give me ur name and number, give me the keys 2 ur ride

Put the top down, let me cruise up the ocean side

Let me put my arm around u, unsnap your self-consciousness....

My bad, I see it's been around for awhile. Called Come Outside and Play. Don't know how I missed this one though. Thanks everyone.

Come outside and play (as I know it) has been in circulation since Pontius was a Pilate.

If there's another song called Play out there then I've not heard but would dearly love too.

Couldnt get into this one much but nice to hear. I understand why he removed it, Get Off and Love Left were much better tunes. I used to get this and My Tree mixed up they kinda sound alike.

Me too. IIRC it was slated for the planned double-single New Power Generation 12''. Would love it if that had actually been released.
