Which Prince song is most like poetry?

Just pure poetry?

As of today I'm going with "Sometimes It Snows in April."

Y'all?

For me WDC reads like poetry.
Baby, you're a star.

Meet me in another world, space and joy

Liberate my mind
Tell me what u think of me, praise me, craze me
Out this space and time.

Black night seemed like the only way
And so I danced

Interesting post, when I was 17 and studying English literature, Prince's lyrics read like poetry to me, here's the songs that I think read like poetry:

Positivity
Mountains
Paisley Park
Sign 'o the Times

Co sign...

lets just read again...

Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you my darling
Can you picture this?

Dream if you can a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

Touch if you will my stomach
Feel how it trembles inside
You've got the butterflies all tied up
Don't make me chase you
Even doves have pride

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold? (World so cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold? (A world that's so cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding (Maybe, maybe I'm like my father)
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold (Ya know he's too bold)
Maybe you're just like my mother (Maybe you're just like my mother)
She's never satisfied (She's never, never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other (Why do we scream, why)
This is what it sounds like

When doves cry

I agree. It's haunting and lyrically can stand allone without music.

Agree with the previous selections, especially WDC and Power Fantastic (and PoomPoom biggrin ). I would add Condition of the Heart!

WDC is the obvious one. Also In a Large Room with No Light and The Love We Make.

Anthoknee

I would say Adonis & Bathsheba as far as outtakes are concerned and with released songs, Joy In Repitition but these two are just off the top of my head. Ask me tomorrow and the answer could be totally different. But that's the great thing about Prince, his standards were incredibly high (at least when he WANTED to be poetic).

Sign o the times. Beautiful economy of language.

wDC. A poem and short story in one.

Holy a River/Love U Make

Gold

Condition of the Heart

Even single lines like: I strangled Valentino/you been mine ever since/if anybody asks you/you belong to Prince.... Genius

A hugely underrated lyricist. Sadly, marginalized as writing only about lust....

I agree with those mentioned above (especially Adore, J in R, I Love u but I don't trust u). I was listening to Screams of Passion today.... wow...those lyrics r beautiful... especially the line "a robin sings a masterpiece that lives and dies unheard...for screams of passion".... that's beautiful!!

Here r the lyrics...quite exquisite!!

There's a gentle autumn breeze that blows
Whenever we be lyin', lyin' in my bed
The moon appears and disappears, you look at me
My clothes I quickly, I quickly shed

The curtains dance a minuet
Autumn plays the music, baby
Come on, hold my hand
Leaves are fallin' velvet splash

Only you and I can under, only you can understand
The sunlight draws a picture through the silky lace
That hangs above your, hangs above your door
A picture that is waving that it seems
To be with every thrust you make me beg for more

Oh, a robin sings a masterpiece
That lives and dies unheard
For screams of passion
A sound produced by to in love
Curtains dance and autumn plays on
(Oh, to in love, on and on)

The screams of passion
All I hear in my head echoing like a volcano, baby
The screams of passion
Back and forth the raging seas of lust, I want you madly
Can't you tell, can't you tell, can't you tell, can't you tell? Oww

Take me in your arms, oh baby
The crime is done, I'd rather die here in your
Screams of passion, whoa, hold me now, baby
Tell me that you love me
Is it Sunday or is it passion?

Love, love
(The screams of passion)
The screams of passion, yeah, yeah, love
The screams of, the screams of
The screams of passion, passion
Hand me that love

Yeah
(Shh, not so loud baby)
Yeah
(Shh, shh)
The screams of passion
The screams of passion

Oh, oh, oh, the screams of passion
Ooh, the screams of, the screams of
The screams of passion, the screams of passion
Back and forth the raging seas of lust

Raging, raging
(The screams of passion)
You know I want you madly, baby
Why can't you tell? Oww
Is is it Sunday?
(Ooh love, ooh love)

I thought I heard a church bell
(Or was it passion, passion?)
Yeah, yeah
(Ooh)
Passion, the screams of passion

What did you say, baby?
Excuse me but is that your passion?
Do you want my passion?
Uh, do you want my passion?

If you want my love, if you want my body, baby
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let
Uh, let me hear ya scream, I want some passion

Ooh, you know what I'm talkin' about baby?
Ooh, I want some passion
You got that baby? I want some passion, passion, mmm
