Heartbreak behind the Muppets episode

.
I can't imagine the pain inside as he filmed this, considering that his baby had died the day before.

I can't even imagine! Got a feeling music was his only way of coping

Makes his choice of "She Gave Her Angels" even more poignant, doesn't it?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It sounds like his voice is a few seconds from breaking into a sob in that whole episode.

In other words, he has left his grieving wife behind to go and shoot a Muppets episode? The day after they've lost their baby?

We all have different ways of grieving of course and I am in no way trying to judge the way Prince tried to cope with his loss. But coping with your own grief is one thing – leaving your wife alone with her grief is another...

Oh my sad

Is it really true that the shooting was a day after their loss? Reading Mayte's book gave me the impression that they've spent at least a few days together grieving.

Could not imagine but that is how he coped.

He had a commitment. People were depending on him and they were ready to film.
If you've read what Mayte said, she wasn't sure of the time.
I'll believe the production crew.

.
He had a commitment to his wife too, made on their wedding day, to stand by her through thick and thin. She depended on him too in more than one way. I'm sorry, I have tremendous respect for Prince for many things, but this I just cannot get my head around. Leaving your wife grieving alone a day after such a tragic loss is absolutely mind boggling.

The Muppets crew were NOT dependent on him - the job was. Not the people. Shit happens sometimes that halts a film production, so what! His wife, however, very much needed him.

Please someone tell me the production team got the dates wrong or something...

I wish people would stop trying to portray Prince as a) a sad tragic figure deserving our sympathy or b) a cold heartless monster. The man has been dead for almost a year now. He is no longer here to tell us what he thought or felt, so let's stop guessing and speculating! Let's focus on the music instead of trying to get inside the head of a man who is no longer with us.

This guy threw himself into his work to cope. He did not stop working when his parents died. From what Mayte said he was at the hospital everyday with her and the baby. He is the one that made the furneral arrangements, dealt with nannies, and still had a commitment to promote the album he was not working for himself back then and yes he did have employees that were counting on him. He was strong man carrying a lot on his shoulders.

As I said before, how he coped with his own pain was his business and I wasn't judging him on that. Leaving your wife alone with HER grief A DAY AFTER their tragic loss is a totally different thing though. And yes I've read the book, I know he was with her a lot in the hospital etc. That's no excuse for leaving her a day after they've lost their baby.

And sorry, but I don't give a flying one about business commitments at the time of such a loss.

Possibly the agreement to do the Muppets had been planned well in advance. I'm sure he had to have felt that he had to go forward and possibly made arrangements for someone to be with Mayte in his absence. I'm sure that it was a very hard decision. Sometimes work is expected to come before anything else. The job (work) is cold and has no feelings.

When my Mother was in the final week of her life, (under Hospice Care) I called my boss to update him on her condition. He said to me (direct quote) "how much longer is it gonna take her to die"??

So as I said, P may have been feeling pressure that no one knows about. To judge him would be wrong as we have no idea. As for me, I almost lost my job and returned to work the day after my Mother's funeral. Sometimes situations are deeper than we think.
My heart still hurts for them. I can't imagine losing one of my daughter's.

I can't believe Mayte didn't know about this contractually required appearance on a children's show. This was obviously part of his family friendly plan, which included the children's album and Oprah interview.
The man certainly did have a boss: "responsibility" and a hell of a LOT of medical expenses, payroll, Paisley, etc.
.
If he had suddenly cancelled those appearances, it would have brought more attention.
.
There are levels of responsibility that do not allow you to skip out for a few days.

You seem disturbed. You weren't married to Prince, you didn't have his children. Why are you sung emotionally invested in something that happened more than 20 years ago? You make it seem like Prince left Mayte to fend for herself in the streets like she was his whore and he was her pimp! Prince was a working man and he was doing his part to make sure bills were paid and income kept coming in. It aint that deep!

And while I'm at it, I supported 3 children by myself. No assistance from anyone. I worked 2 part time jobs and a full time job. YES work dictated my life because I had to provide for my family. Ridiculous??? I think not! I busted my butt for my babies and I would do it again.

And this right here is all that needs to be said. I'd never even try to criticize someone's handling of such a tragedy along with everything else he going through during that time.

I don't think some people around here realize there are many people right here on this board who have been gilted in far worse ways and have had to handle EVERYTHING on their own, broke as dirt sometimes. How much more sympathy does this one woman need from every single person? Truth. Prince is the one that got a lot of us through our own struggles, not her. I think enough is enough, from the Mayte pity party brigade.

Mayte doesn't discuss this Muppets episode in her book so I am hoping his behavior did not cause her more grief than she already had. And she doesn't mention nannies at all either, so maybe that story is all fiction. There was no funeral for the baby.

Agree with you both... Zena and Morningsong. A lot of us have been through our own life's ups and downs and never acted in the way we are witnessing.

According to someone on this thread, Mayte never described the incident. Since she doesn't talk about it, how do we know how the Muppets thing even went done. Nowhere in the article does it state that Prince lost his kid the day before. Am I missing something? They stated that the producer found out about Prince's tragedy days after the airing.

Also, maybe he did it in one day but kept calling her on the phone while she laid in bed mourning, maybe her mom was there, maybe he regretted what he did, maybe he did it so she could watch the show with the next kid they have... Since we don't have any details, maybe we should just assume that Mayte was not too upset about it.

The day after my dad died, I went to work and wrote a proposal for a 60,000$ project. I was successful. The fact is, we all cope with things in our own way. Work can be therapeutic and I am sure that is the way Prince saw it. He loved his work, and it helped him cope. I am not sure how anyone can find fault with how a person copes in such a horrible situation.
