The Family was what ATWIAD should have been WHen I first got into Prince, I was so blown away by The Family LP, and the ATWIAD b-sides, that I thought this.
I love ATWIAD, but it's such a shame The Family LP didn't have a larger audience, I guess Prince carried many of it's traits into Parade, so it did get an airing as such --------------------

I think the two were a perfect complement to each other, it was a chance for Prince to try out two different sides of his persona, that were then reunited to create the masterpiece that was Parade. I'd never really thought about it that way before. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

and the ATWIAD b-sides I think that this album lacks 4TTIYEyes - original version, and too bad Miss Understood is not on The Family album, I love this song

I think ATWIAD was damn near perfect...for what Prince wanted to say. He could have replaced the title track with "The Dance Electric" or Paisley Park with "Mutiny". But he chose not to.
ATWIAD is a statement, of not conforming. It is the biggest single step Prince has ever made in pushing away commercial success. Funny thing is, he spent the next 10 years trying to find it again... .

Really? I love ATWIAD, very fun, creative album. I alos like how he tried not to be so commercial. that's one of the things I like about him, how he doesn't(didn't) do what was(is) expected of him. So could he have done The Family's material himself, sure, but I don't think i would like him as much. Does that make any sense?
ATWIAD is classic Prince, not comfroming, not doing what's expected of him, and pissing people off. Now don't get me wrong, I ADORE The Family album, I myself have never understood why it didn't do so good. They're probably, dare I say, one of his best talented proteges, IMHO. ~KiKi
