This. It makes sense as a gospel, sung with the crowd. See the 1988 Paris shows bootlegs for a fine example.
Not a big fan of the studio version, Mavis tries her best, but it's one hell of a weird experiment on the sampler. Sampling is not Prince's best ability, by far. He never used it as a real creative medium, like nineties trip-hop artists did. Heck, Kate Bush is much more creative with a sampler. That said, I'm thankful for the Omnibus/BBC documentary shots.
