We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The song is about individuality. Cynthia is ostracized but happy. She's the odd duck but seems to be the only student content with herself. While everyone else is wasting their time worrying about Cynthia, she is busy doing what she likes with little thought about what the others are saying or doing. By the end of the song, even the speaker admires her aloofness/happiness.

Mates used to be a brand of condom. No I idea if that's Prince's reference on S&C, but he had been in Europe in 1986 and may have picked some up then.
It wouldn't be the first time: The line, "She had a pocket full of horses, Trojans, some of them used," refers to Trojan condoms. The "Jockeys" represent men who have previously slept with the girl. These were veiled sexual references that not enough people got to make the song be considered offensive. (http://www.songfacts.com/...hp?id=1770)

Thanks for the great story OLdfriends4sale! Love it! Prince had a way of accepting all people

He's talking about the mismatched socks. Those who are trying to extrapolate this into food or condoms or whatever are trying too hard.

Yeah, but... Keeping your socks next to your food... It is kinda strange, isn't it?

I'll admit a bit of foolish misinterpretation that, after hundreds of listens, I've only now cleared up because of this thread. I always thought it was:
"Sometimes, I wondered if the meats were in her lunchbox."
Another way of saying "I wondered if she had all her marbles.."
This always made sense to me because of the previous line, "Cynthia wore the prettiest dress but different colored socks..." Suggesting Cynthia Rose saw things differently.
But it's great to have this cleared up! "Mates." Very interesting.
