Question about "Love 2 the 9's" lyric This lyric from "Love 2 the 9's" had always bugged me since I first heard it - maybe I'm thinking too deeply of it.
This lyric (Prince's rap): "Could you keep your cool if I washed your feet?"
Hearing this made me go "WTF?!" As I can see, Prince wrote this song for Mayte Garcia. So it's a love song. But the expression "keep your cool" usually means trying to remain calm and not be excited to anger.
So is Prince basically saying "could you refrain yourself from getting angry if I washed your feet" Or does it mean something else? |

Keeping one's cool could also be interpreted to mean simply controlling any emotion, like fear, excitement, lust, etc.
Maybe Mayte's feet were ticklish and having her feet washed would've had her tense up or collapse in giggles.

Another possible meaning is that the line is a play on the idea that P is a Jesus-like figure and she should take his declaration of love as serious as she can. As serious as the Bible even. After all, that's what the song is about; he's wondering if she will love him more than all the others who came before. Will she love him 2 the 9s.

It's a biblical reference - at the last supper, Jesus washed his disciplines feet, then they ate the Passover meal together - this was the first communion. It shows his devotion and humility to his followers. Catholics and most other churches don't do the foot washing, only the eating of the unleavened bread, drinking of wine. Prince was seventh day Adventist or at least very familiar with that church, and they wash each other's feet as part of communion. Have you heard of "foot-washing baptists"? Same concept. If you come from this religious background, there's absolutely no question what he means when you hear that lyric. | |
