Jon Bream, Star Tribune "Possessed" does not offer a serious analysis of Prince's art. typical Rather, this book chronicles the ups and downs of his career, with plenty of pseudo-psychoanalysis of the shortcomings that eventually toppled him from the top of the pops. Hahn portrays Prince as a self-indulgent, obsessive, demanding, capricious, promiscuous, uncaring, petulant, spoiled brat/genius/workaholic.
typical Yup. Very typical. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

typical Yup. Very typical. Actually that is how the media has portrayed Prince most of the time. But this time the author Alex Hahn may indeed have an axe to grind, and if the title of the book alone does not key you in, as towards it's contents. Then most undoubtedly the authors name will or should. If you know anything about the Prince Vs Uptown Magazine lawsuit.

The author's unnamed sources suggest that Prince's use of the prescription painkiller Percodan contributed to his erratic behavior circa 2000.

Jon Bream, Star Tribune http://www.startribune.co...09887.html Published April 9, 2003 From Prince's legal adversary to his biographer. That's the leap that Alex Hahn is trying to make. The book reads like an in-depth fanzine written by a voracious researcher/fan: "Possessed" does not offer a serious analysis of Prince's art. Rather, this book chronicles the ups and downs of his career, with plenty of pseudo-psychoanalysis of the shortcomings that eventually toppled him from the top of the pops. Hahn portrays Prince as a self-indulgent, obsessive, demanding, capricious, promiscuous, uncaring, petulant, spoiled brat/genius/workaholic. The author's unnamed sources suggest that Prince's use of the prescription painkiller Percodan contributed to his erratic behavior circa 2000. "Possessed" too often seems secondhand and gossipy. Reading it, you wonder if Hahn has ever seen Prince in concert. Could he see the purple through the pain? *** That's all I need to know. I'm sure some tabloid trash like the UK's Sun or News of the World would love to serialise some of this. What a wasted opportunity this book is.

Which explains why Bart van Hemelen is such a rabid supporter of this book...

What erratic behaviour? That's interesting if it's true. I'm really looking forward to reading this book even more now tons of fans who haven't even read it are jumping up and down shouting their mouth off about it. Prince preaches, but does he practice? --------------------

The funny thing is that around that time I had heard from people that Prince had been buying painkillers from someone. I didn't believe it at the time, but this is veryinteresting.

I won't be buying it or even reading it. I will wait for Prince to write it his story and if he doesn't, that's ok with me. I already know what I need to know and I hate speculation and rumours. I suggest we all leave it on the shelf.

Cool, if that's what you want to do... It is after all just a book. To some fans just knowing the book is about Prince is enough, as they want more and more insight into the closed door side of Prince the man. Will Prince ever write his own book? Only Prince knows for sure. I feel these types of books do not do anything to harm Prince's status as a legendary musican, or him personally, but actually just reveal a living, breathing, freeminded spirit. Who is all so human, and he is... as are we all... smile... 8)

As always some fascinating opinions from everyone. I
should be getting mine by FRiday. And will give my take asAP. The people who refused to give their view to HAhn- (aside from the girl bros.) most of these folk,morris,sheila..etc are still on good terms with P...so i don't see them giving alex H any info. this is my view. P is one hell of a musician, singer & performer, And like many people in his position he isn't exactly a poster child for being Nice all fo the time. that doesn't make him anything but human. many of the stories about him over the years are consistant. i mean why should we fans be shocked that so many people would spill the beans on him-seriously he's left quite a dubious trail of broken hearts (feelings) along the way. i don't hold this against the guy. its his LIfe not mine. he's the one who's gotta answer to the bad stuff he's done to some people. reading HAhn's book won't make me feel any different about him. i'm a P fan til the end...

One other point:
when i read fred wesley's account on JAMES Brown i already knew 80 % of the stories wesley related...it was the other 20% that blew me away. James wrote his own autobio years ago. And typically it was overblown and jb made himself seem like an angel. for those who want P to write his own story-think about it. He used to lie his butt off when he did interviews and might not tell us the truth in a book. not that i need him to write such a book. in the 25 years i've listened to the man's music i've gotten a pretty good idea what he's about. my love for him will always be about the MUSIC. everything else is cool to talk about ,but doesn't really matter. after all...i don't have to work for him!!! (thank GOD for that...haha.) P's still DA BEST...!!!

I wished Alex "good luck" with his book last night.
I think that he will need it because the book will not sell according to plan. The music "gods" don't want Prince to have the publicity. Prince was not a "good" person in previous years, but in recent years he has lost a baby, his "wife",his parents.I think that his recent album TRC is an attempt to reach GOD through his talent and apologize to him for the misfortune he's caused other people. I agree with you. I put no stock into anything I don't hear or see for myself. As for me, I wouldn't buy a book that even Prince wrote himself. He tends to contradict himself in some of the interviews I have read.

After reading about a quarter of the book so far, one of the things that get to me are the couple of factual errors in the book that make it somewhat hard to completely believe in the book. For instance, it said Controversy was a 1982 album. There are a couple of other things (little like that) that make me say, "C'mon man!!! A least get the little stuff right!" Otherwise, so far it's a good read, though nothing too earth-shattering yet. Love the story about the Time feud with what he did to Jesse! LOL!!

I got the book today and read most of it. The book went into the Anna Fantastic situation, but not all that much. Actually alot is missing from the book. But the overall feel of this book is to make Prince look as moody as possible. lol! Which he is, as is his right. It's a clean book and not as negative as i thought it would be. It attempts to piece together Prince the man against the common Prince persona. All i can tell them. The ones digging so hard. He's male. He is human. He makes music for the true spirit of expression and has the right to make mistakes, change his mindset and his discussions, as he sees them. Just as anyone would hope to have those rights also. Prince is Prince... Think about it... smile... 8)
