Prince's best B-sides such as "HCUDCMA?","17 days", "Erotic City", "She's always in my hair".. Blow away anything he did from 1989 to 2016.. Like Questlove explained.. 78 to 88 was his window where he was building his Own sound.. 1982 to 87 Prince connected with the musical audience On every level.. From 1989 forward, Prince was no longer the trend setter. He started chasing hip -hop(which he put down on "dead on it") & using a rapper who was awful. Prince had more have baked ideas but still had some good albums left in him. Let's be honest, come, chaos & disorder, NPS, Were throw away albums. I will say that the gold experience, Emancipation& TRC were good but but not great albums. 3121 had a very weak first single & people overrated that Album. The RUTJF had some good songs but tried desperately to make a commerical comeback.. With too many guest stars on it. Everybody has that that period where they are in a zone. From 1979 to 88, Prince was growing & created his own sound. It seemed as if he lost his way or didn't have that clear of A vision, after that point. Plus the fact that name change turned a lot of People off as well [Edited 4/2/17 12:17pm]

Prince also in the zone 94-98 and again the last 5 years of his life. And great as the songs you mentioned were, I'll take songs off the Rainbow Children or Lotus Flower albums over any B side from the 80's . Feel bad for you if you slept on that stuff.

OK, rusty1, you made your point of being a troll.

Now please go back to your eighties favorites and go preach somewhere/someone else.

Oh, and learn about ponctuation.

No one tells me what i like and rate especially questlove or anybody here. Prince made some fantastic cuts/Albums after 88 to 2016. Am sick of critics and so called fans rubbishing his later catalogue> Music critics never listen to it so don't give it a chance and rubbish it.

Many of the reviews when they first came out for individual albums aren't that bad. The problem is when a critic tries to come up with theories and narratives about his overall career trajectory..then they get really lazy when analyzing later work.

Also,, I looked back at AOA reviews. They were mostly solid-to-positive except when critics reviewed AOA and Plectrumelectrum as one release. Then the grades were lower. But then after reading those reviews, it was painfully clear that they considered one album to be much better than the other. It pisses me off that they didn't review the albums seperately.

They are lazy as fuck and comparing his work to his other work. Another example of laziness..reviews for Crystal Ball. I bet half the critics didn't listen to Kama Sutra or the Truth (partly due to difficulty of getting to hear them). The reviews were mostly for just the outtakes on the first three CD's because they usually only talk about what is on the first three CD's and just quickly mention the Truth. Really, an all accoustic Prince album doesn't get discussed? Obviously, they didn't listen to it. Questlove actually did convince me to listen to the Truth album. He loved it. So, maybe Rusty1, needs to stop generalizing about Questlove's taste.

There are very few albums that deserve 1 star reviews but there are also buttholes who want to give AOA or 3121 a one star review..Well, the Guardian and The Telegraph gave the AOA album 4/5 stars when it came out. Rolling Stone gave it 3.5/5 stars when it came out.

Another interesting phenomenom where reviews are concerned is the ratings not matching the descriptions. For example, I will read a whole review of an album of prince's and there is no negative things stated about any of the songs and then the review will inevitably end with "but its no Sign of the Times, don't get me wrong." with no other explanation followed by a relatively average review (3 out of 5 stars or something like that.) Jesus, they really love thinking that wild sexy (non-JW, pre-rap) Prince with WB behind him making him look legit can not be topped or even equaled.

In my view, speaking as a fan since 2004, the 82-88 is too often praised, whereas the work after that is vastly underrated.

The main albums from the 'classic period' for me are DM, PR, ATWIAD, Sign and Lovesexy. But I would rate Love Symbol, The Truth, Rainbow Children, N.E.W.S, LotusFlower and HitNRun Phase II on a par with those eighties albums and above Parade and 1999 and well above Controversy.

There are sensational songs like Diamonds & Pearls, Morning Papers, Sacrifice of Victor, Gold, Don't Play Me, It's About That Walk, Everlasting Now, Get On The Boat, Colonised Mind, Big ciy that are far superior to songs from the 'classic' period like Automatic, Do U Lie and It.

I wouldn't be a fan, that is to say fanatical, if it wasn't for the work made after the 80s.
