Looks like Ricky Peterson (older brother of Paul) playing keyboards for Stevie in the video (keyboardist with longer hair).

I saw this video about a week or so ago. It's such a great story, and really nixes the "He walked in, played a part with two fingers and left" story. The fact that he sat down, played a few instruments, etc., and was engaging makes a much better story. I mean, I doubt if he was in all purple, glitter and velvet, but embellishments are bound to happen. I do like that he played a few keyboard parts, and some guitar. It makes me appreciate the song even more.

And let's remember, that sometimes this song gets wrapped up in the haze of 1984, but it was out before that. This was probably January 1983, while on break from the 1999 Tour. They were on break from January 4 - February 1, 1983. He was at Sunset Sound for a week Jan 7-14. This was probably when Nicks was working on her album. The song was released May 19, 1983, as the lead single to The Wild Heart (released a month later). So this was even before they started filming Purple Rain, but obviously the film was probably in motion with writing, storylines, notes, etc.

I'm not sure if that's Ricky Peterson or not. There are two videos for the song. Ricky wasn't on the album in any fashion, nor was he on the tour. Was he there for the video? It's unlikely because an artist will use their band for that, even a session musician for the sake of making the video.

There are also two mixes of the song, one is a bit more 'flat' in its sound, and is about 30 seconds shorter. The album version is just under 5 minutes.

i just bought a dvd with it, and watched an earlier interview, she said she called him before she recorded stand back because she knew it was so derivative, kind of like how prince called journey before purple rain. she also seemed hazy on what he played, that it may have been more than the keyboard parts. i thought it was wierd that he was a big fleetwood mac fan, i never listened to much of them so i can't see the attraction myself but i guess it's documented.

Thanks Rogifan for posting this. I was charmed by her fan-girlness given that she had been a success for years before he appeared on the scene. It seems that the people I admire as being really creative in the music industry - Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Miles Davis, and Bruce Springsteen (for his concerts) and so forth so admired his genius. That speaks volumes. These aren't people who would sing the high praises for a fellow musician unless they meant it.

i never was a huge fan, i liked a couple of her songs but i bought a dvd of hers and she was actually a damn good, charismatic performer which is very hard to pull off in the rock world for a woman, only tina turner does it with that kind of masculinity and pulls it off. Rock and Roll has always been a boys club and has really marginalized and limited what women could do and be. I guess Joan Jett did a good job too but she was pretty small time in comparson.

They were talking about the live video clip with the article posted, not the actual video for the song. Ricky Peterson is in Stevie's touring band now.

I think the whole world knows by now her Stand Back story!!! She needs to tell the story of Purple Rain, and how that song very nearly became hers and not Princes'!! I think the whole world would be blown away and shocked!!!

Nice story. I saw her on this tour with Pretenders opening. She told a similar story. I always thought 'If anyone falls' sounds more like a Prince song than 'Stand Back'. I enjoyed the Pretenders' set more than hers.
