Princes Npg Band Is Boring I do not feel excited to see Renato Neto all he plays alright but lacks the dynamics and style of other keyboardist in the past. John BLackwell is an amazing drummer but Micheal B had more fanfare . The only ones who have some life is Candy Dulfer and Rhonda Smith. The energy is not there maybe I am feeling pessimistic today just a passing thought enough of this Jazz... I want some Funk. what are your thoughts on the band compared to past players please do not refer to the Revolution.

I've always thought the "NPG" sounded gay and lacked real character
Just think about it... NEW POWER GENERATION. The whole concept should've died back in '92, along with the Typhoon haircut and the geekboy dancers. Then consider THE REVOLUTION. Far less "talented", and yet far, far more interesting and stylish. Ah, but the 80s were a different time, weren't they.

Style as in dress? or sound? As far as sound is concerned, Renato trumps both Mr. "I trigger sample" Hayes and Tommy Barbarella. Renato may not have as much stage presence in terms of personality, and he may not be conversant in the language, but as far as *playing* he's creating far more interesting sounds from his keys than any previous NPG player. John BLackwell is an amazing drummer but Micheal B had more fanfare.
Michael B had a heavier foot. His beats were harder and more prominent. But John seems more versatile. I wonder if Michael B could play the drums on "Everywhere." I need to go and listen to It to determine if Michael could play as quick on the drum parts of Everywhere most likely no unless we gave him some

The Revolution and the Lovesexy band were the only ones worth a damn in my opinion. They had energy and character. The NPG has always sucked even though they had talent as players. But as for now, I think Prince first needs to work on putting life into his music, then getting a band with a pulse. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Well I did not want to be as brutal I do agree with the part of getting a band with a Pulse

I don't think that the current band has the same sort of drive and enthusiasm as bands, like the Lovesexy band, or the 93-96 NPG. But I think that has more to do with the arrangements he's having them play, arranging to their strengths. That's where their drive and great sound come from. They are his most overall proficient and accomplished band to date, even if it seems like there's a certain amount of energy lacking, but I think it has to more to do with what Prince is doing now, and what he's doing with his band. For what they are doing, they're quite wonderful.

It's more like pointing out that someone's new idea is much more dorky than it is cool.

Personally I think Prince shoulda dropped the 'NPG' thing
when he stopped using Sonny T, Michael B, Tommy B & Mr Hayes. It worked better when it refered to a specific backing band like 'The Revolution', rather than just being a generic name that applied to 'the fans' and whatever musicians Prince happened to be using at the time.
