Prince in the Studio: The Stories Behind the Hits 1977 - 1994 by Jake Brown

Given his tragic recent passing, Prince's fans are clamoring for new books, and this is the most out of the box of all of them, focusing exclusively on the creation of the hits that made him a legend over nearly 40 years as an icon.

Newsweek reported in the wake of Prince’s passing that the Purple wunderkind “expanded the realm of what is or might be possible for a pop star to accomplish – and he made it look easy.” Accomplishing this feat musically above all other due recognitions, Prince was without a doubt the Mozart of his time, and one whose catalog will no doubt be studied and celebrated by musical generations to come for the simple truth that, as Time Magazine has so eloquently noted, “at his best, Prince has always been…far ahead of his time.” Working with his musical imagination as a canvas and the 35+ musical instruments he played as his brushes, each and every one of the Purple pioneer’s albums – from “1999” and “Purple Rain” to “Sign O’the Times” and “Batman” and beyond – were not merely works of art, but galleries with each song a portrait opening our ears to new sounds and possibilities realized, often for the first time. Now, for the first time, in the pages of “PRINCE IN THE STUDIO: The Stories Behind the Hits 1977-1994,” the creation of this multi-instrumentalist’s timeless catalog is chronicled in a front-row seat for readers that takes them deeper inside the heart of Prince’s rare creative process than ever before!!

This is the first time Prince fans can read about the making of every one of his greatest hits, including “Little Red Corvette,” “1999,” “Kiss,” “Batdance,” “Purple Rain,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Sign O’the Times,” “Cream,” “Seven,” “Pop Life,” “Let’s Pretend We’re Married,” “Take Me With U,” “Alphabet St.,” “Diamonds and Pearls,” “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” “The Beautiful Ones,” “U Got the Look,” “D.M.S.R.,” “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “I Feel For You,” “When U Were Mine,” “Delirious,” “When Doves Cry,” “Sexy M.F.,” “Get Off,” “Money Don’t Matter 2nite,” “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” “Somebody’s Somebody,” “P. Control,” “Crazy Relationship,” and “I Would Die 4 U!”

Right now $10.24 at Barnes & Noble

Were all his songs in 1977 hits? And i thought he died in 2016 not 1994?

When are writers going to focus on all of his music and not just the WB stuff?

It does look like graphic art. Graphic books are popular these days so maybe they use that photo trying to appeal to younger audience.

Don't let the cover put you off. It's a great read for a Prince fan. Think I might read mine again.

Crazy Relationship, huh? If this is any indication of the book's content, it's not very encouraging. And yeah, I also thought Prince died in 16 not 94...

So this is a repackaging of his seven year old book? The one that's a complete and utter mess, desperately in search of a decent editor? The one where he copy-pasted info and interviews from other books and forums like the Org and Housequake without proper attribution?

Thank you Bart. A definite pass and someone should be beaten for that art work.

Give Jake Brown some credit. It takes a lot of effort to prouduce a book about Prince that have no desire to own and he's one of
the few authors to have achieved that.

And what's that cover? It's like someone asked what would the child of Prince and Michael Jackson look like if he was ever bitten by the walking dead!

Bart's description might be a bit harsh--but it was a tough read, though I found stuff I hadn't seen before. It really could have used an editor. It seemed like every time someone was quoted he gave their whole CV. A lot of repetition and organizational issues too, if I remember right.

I read the thing on a tablet, so I didn't have to see the cover art much. But I think the old art was better... or at least not actively bad.

The popularity of graphic novels has nothing to do with this - they've taken a great photo and fucked it up by drawing on top of it.

Even better will be a book by Kiwi author Hamish Whitta, which will speak on bootlegs.

That cover looks horrible though, airbrushed anime. I consider it racial too, he looks too white there.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Huh, so someone is publishing a book on their favorite bootlegs? What's the point?

My guess is the point of a book like this is that it's something the author is passionate about and perhaps he thinks other people might like it too.

Much like the point of ever other book I suppose.

I know I'll be picking one up.
