AN HONEST MAN
I want 2 be an honest man
♥
Initial tracking took place on 30 November, 1985 (on the same day as Mountains) at the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA. It is thought that the a capella version was created around the same time, and it may have been intended as a brief opening track for the Parade album, in the same vein as For You on the For You album. The Crystal Ball liner notes state that the song is "inspired by Kristin Scott Thomas' character Mary Sharon in Under The Cherry Moon."

DETROIT FREE PRESS PRINCE TAKES A CUE FROM HIS PAST
GARY GRAFF; DONNA OLDENDORF
Parade -- Prince (Paisley Park/Warner Bros.): Prince takes stock of the various directions he has explored during his eight-year recording career and integrates them into an intriguing and, ultimately, entertaining work. He brings his music back to the dance floor of "Dirty Mind" and "1999" without getting trapped by the same old steps. He also retains the psuedo-psychedelic edge -- and makes better use of it -- than he did on last year's album, "Around the World in a Day." And he checks any pretensions by managing to keep his sense of humor and fun throughout the record. The only thing missing is the hard rock guitar pyrotechnics of his breakthrough record, "Purple Rain," but they wouldn't really fit here, anyway.
The gems on "Parade" -- due in stores on Monday -- are unquestionably the foot-movers, stuff like the quirky first single, "Kiss," "New Position," "Girls & Boys," "Mountains" and "Anotherloverholenyohead." But Prince is equally effective when he about-faces on "Venus De Milo," a soft piano-saxophone duet, and "Sometimes It Snows in April," a moody acoustic piece full of religious metaphors. The lulls come when Prince dips too far into psychedelia on the imitative "Wonder U," "Christopher Tracy's Parade" and "Under a Cherry Moon," songs written more as accompaniment for the visuals of Prince's upcoming film, "Under a Cherry Moon," than as listening pieces. Still, the bulk of "Parade" is listenable and enjoyable, a confirmation of Prince's place as a superior melodist, arranger and player as well as a celebration of his creativity. | |

NEW POSITION
Honey, we been 2gether
Initial tracking took place in Spring-Summer 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years. This original 1982 recording remains unreleased. The track was re-recorded on 17 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with Prince recording the drum track in sequence of Little Girl Wendy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U and Under The Cherry Moon, all in one take. He then layered other instruments over all four tracks. Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA, but Prince preferred the track without orchestration, and chose to use the track without orchestration for the final release. -PrinceVault

30 years on I still cannot believe he got to "Parade" within eight years of signing his deal. The kind of creative growth and energy most artists don't manage in a lifetime compressed into less than a decade
It was just astonishing - everything about this period was so unbelievably rich and imaginative.
How was he ever going to top it?

Heaven (recorded in France summer '84), this whimsical track was recorded in May of 1985 but was never placed on any configuration of Parade. Prince plays the main "carnivalesque" theme on the organ, alternating with a different figure, played on synth sounding like a harp. The lyrics reflect Prince's belief that heaven can be a place on earth.
Heaven will be here on earth

I Wonder U
Lead vocals are sung by Wendy Melvoin, marking the first time lead vocals were not sung by Prince on a Prince/Prince and the Revolution album.
Initial tracking of the track took place on 17 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with Prince recording the drum track in sequence of Little Girl Wendy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U and Under The Cherry Moon, all in one take. He then layered other instruments over all four tracks. The song was initially recorded with Prince and Wendy Melvoin both singing lead and Lisa Coleman doing a harmony background vocal.
That version was placed on an early configuration of Parade (before it even had that title), compiled on 1 May, 1985. The song was sent to Clare Fischer in mid-late 1985 for his input. Fischer did two different orchestral arrangements; one with full orchestration, and after a later request of Prince, one with only 'flute family' orchestration, much like the finally released version. These versions had Prince's lead vocal mixed in loudest, mostly obscuring Wendy's vocals. Before release Prince then omitted his own voice, so that Wendy was now singing the lead. Clare Fischer's full orchestration arrangement remains unreleased although Prince did use some of it as incidental music in Under The Cherry Moon.
