You can hear it in his music. His mom looks very Creole. It's fitting that New Orleans celebrated his passing in big traditional style. What a great city and a brilliant artist.

Very interesting. It explains his exotic looks! I was born and raised in LA and never knew about this.

It's about damned time that someone finally wrote an article that recognized P's family's Louisiana Creole roots.

I knew about Prince's Louisiana roots, they are very similar to mine, my whole family is Louisiana born and bred.

I'm sure the entire state will proudly claim him, but based on this article, Prince's ancestors were actually from Northern Louisiana. North and South LA are as different as Northern and Southern CA, NYC and Upstate NY, or Northern Virginia and the rest of the state. The "Creole" culture, which implies significant French blood in the genetic admixture, is found almost exclusively in Southern Louisiana. Based on this article, Prince's family racial mix is African American, White, and Cherokee Indian. Meaning, Prince Rogers Nelson was not Creole.

True, but don't forget those Northern Cane River Creoles in Natchitoches Parish, which is just below Arcadia, Lincoln and Claiborne where P's ancestor were from in that article.
That small detail would lend a bit of credence to P being Creole. No?
The article does mention John Nelson's grand father was the White slaveowner's son, though. I'm gonna guess that there's where the French comes in cuz his wife was described as "a Black slave woman". And when he was disowned by his family for marrying her they travelled "throughout Louisiana preaching the Gospel".
I think us Southern Louisiana Creoles can forgive P for his ancestors' faux pas in not being from a Southern ward. Lol

:fallsoff: Okay, LBrent. But, based on this article, it seems that any French blood is minimal. So much so, no source is identified. Unlike the African American, White, and Cherokee Indian components, which are attributed to various forebears.

interesting, wonder how much of this he knew? Alex Hahn is supposedly doing some geneology for his new book. Prince has said that they knew less about his mothers side. Proud that he's got some Indian in him. Elvis had to lines of cherokee in him, a jewish grandmother with the rest looking to be scottish/irish and german despite persisten rumours that he had some black in his lineage.

Wasn't Elvis supposedly Melungeon like Abraham Lincoln?

melungeon? never heard the term, assume it means black. there have been rumours and still are, i don't think there is really any way of knowing for sure i don't think dna tests even catch everything.

He seemed to be a little closer to his dad so he may have known think of song Family name. [Edited 3/16/17 2:45am]

most black folks have rumours of indian going on in their family, at least most of the ones i've known. that Gates guy had a show trying to say that was a myth and showed dna results for morgan freeman, tina turner and others that showed no native dna, but what they didn't tell is how flawed these results can be. they aren't that accurate.

This is why there are some who were saying that President Obama wasn't the first Black president cuz Abraham Lincoln was Melungeon.

there was another president rumored to be black, calvin coolidge I think but it may have been hoover. It's strange but just about everyone I've ever known has had some idea of having a different race in them, everyone. My family, the indian side believe some french blood is in there despite the lack of evidence and I had a close white friend who asked her mom about any black blood because she'd have a kinky hair sprout out of her head. It's a strange phenomena and I think it's just something that often gets rumoured about in families.
