Why did Prince need to change his looks for every albums? For every album Prince had different hairstyle and clothing.. Was it really necessary for him to change them all the time? Who's gona go through his different looks for each project and memorize them all? He should have kept it more simple like MJ who has about 6 looks to remember .. [Edited 3/16/17 11:27am]

I think he borrowed this from Bowie. It helping shape the "eras" of his music and created a sense of mystique and mystery around his persona.

[Edited 3/16/17 11:24am] . Because Prince was a creative force all his own, who wanted to stay fresh and not stuck in an era. . Pardon me for saying this, but Michael Jackson would not have been nearly as successful without Quincy Jones and musicians who did for him what Prince did for himself. . MJ sang and danced. At age 50, he was trying to outdo Prince while wearing 1980s costumes. . There should be no comparison between the two. . . Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

he changed the style and genre of his music with every album so it's just logic to change the style too. no other musician did what prince did so it's impossible to compare and that's exactly what he wanted. the only love there is is the love we make

But all that mystique fades away in the end dosen't it? Now that he's gone.. is there anything misterious about him? Just my opinion [Edited 3/16/17 11:45am]

He stopped changing his looks regularly sometime around the ONA and Musicology tours. Before he got the afro, he looked more or less the same for ten years. There were some changes, but they weren't that considerable.

trench coats, ruffled shirts, turtlenecks, quirky suites, tribal-religious tunics, . Yes, the evolution of the style definately coincided with the music and era . but the 2000s he pretty much had the same hairstyle from 2001 - 2009/10 and from 2001-2008 it was 99% suites or a very simple look, around the musicology -3121 he introduced some Asian styles, around the Planet Earth era he started wearing more ruffled shirts and some other styles. During the Welcome 2 tours/20Ten more tunics garbed outfists, ruffled shirts and what looked like futuristic Mad Max Welcome to the Thunderdome Tribal styles, that extended into the 3rd Eye Girl era . and we know via Andy Allo he broke into growing his hair out 2013/2014 . The 80s had a more cohesive flow of style that evolved into the next look, and even the period such as Lovesexy harkened back to the Prince(1979) look, mixing in some Parade and Purple Rain(he even wore that outfit that he and Wendy wore(the one he had on in UTCM @ Mary Sharons party) during the Lovesexy tour with a ruffled shirt underneath . Sheila E's 3rd album period their style was a combination of Prince's Parade look(cut off shirts, silk pajamas and ruffled shirts and what turned into the SOTT look via the 'baggy' pants and the shirts Prince wore during Housequake in the SOTT film) . I'm going to post it in the Prince/Mazarati thread, but what Sir Casey Terry wore on the album cover was what Prince later designed and wore during the Lovesexy period for his 'leisure look' . the Band(s) usually reflected Princes own look and also enhanced the cohesive flow and the more defined Graffiti Bridge look was a flow from the 'alphabetic' Lovesexy look. Robin Power & the Uptown Dames wore a lot of what Cat wore during the Lovesexy period. . the rest of the 90s period, Prince look very different from the band. His look even when crazy looking tended to look way better than the band. The bands look never made much sense to me.

Indeed, it was Bowie's great innovation. His music wasn't bad either

If you do not like Prince constantly changing, I can't see how you would find much to like about him. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

I loved it that he kept changing his look. And I loved the Fro.

Probably wanted to stay ahead of the crowd. In the 80s, he wanted to sound the coolest and look the coolest. But never did he dress up like an emperor or bleach his skin like MJ did (Sorry Michael I love you, but he got stuck in the past, Michael was wearing royal robes, Napoleon style coats with lapels and loved crowns, gold and jewels from the early 1980s onwards. Prince never dressed up as a royal. . The fact a thread is around persecuting Prince for doing what any style conscious pop star of the most fashion obsessed decades ever (The 1980s) is sickening. The org becomes more critical of Prince by the minute. Now he is dead, some of you are bashing him mercilessly like a TMZ hot gossip lips witch hunt. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

+1 Prince was fly. He was an artist. He was creative. He had to change it up. The last thing he could ever be is boring and stale - thank God! It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

That's showbiz. Prince knew how to put on a show.

. David Bowie didn't invent marketing - in fact, nor did Prince even though some people believe Prince invented oxygen! . I can't think of anyone who has worn the same clothes and had the same hair style since the time they were born. .

Because he was an ARTIST! Have you ever known any real artists? Their hair is a different color every week- they use fashion as a way to express themselves- it doesn't stop at the music- he was feeling whatever style he was in at the time. You ever met an insurance salesman? Always in khakis and a button down.

Purpleshadow does bring up an interesting point though. It would have been interesting to see him have the Graffiti Bridge era look from 1990 to 2000...or some other look for longer periods of time. [Edited 3/17/17 17:36pm]

Who can forget the pajama decade .. even including a brief sleep mask accessory... with an iron on of his latest album cover on the front of his pj tops ... the innovation rivaled his iconic pr era

Changing your look is a requirement to fulfill the word "fashionable", in Prince's case he was always trying to invent his own fashion that referenced artists or music culture that he liked. But like each album cover, he had to change his look for a different concept each time. But yes from 2001-2010 or so, he kept his hair cut short which made it look similar album to album despite style or texture changes. But he did keep changing the wardrobe look up until the end.
You wouldn't want each album cover to be the same would you? Or for him to stick to one song genre and production style? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

My favorite era's were Purple Rain, Sign O Times and piano and mic Fro. Towards the end it looked like he was going more natural.
