Laura...you're going to start to the "what was Prince's family origin" again with that article..LOL (His Italian mother and 1/2 Black father). P was something else smile

Question: I've read this article before, so it brings it up again. P stated that his father would dream music and get up at 4 a.m. and the music would just flow through him, that it was no work....then P stated he did the same thing. We all know that Prince WAS music. He even called it a "curse" at times, because what he would hear in his head wouldn't let him sleep until he "got it out". Another person who stated he experienced this was Miles Davis. In an interview before he died, he said he could even hear music at a basketball game, and tried to explain to the interviewer how it sounded when the sneakers would come trampling down the court...cricket,cricket is basically what you heard from the interviewer. Question being...in the minds of the greats, is this the way life is for them? Is this their "normal"...to hear music constantly, and until they "get it out", they can't rest? I found this parallel interesting.

Great article...when he describes his father reaction to his own

music, it appears that Prince really emulated him

//There is a controversial article about how Prince might have been on the Autism/ Asperger syndrome. Not do sure about this but people on that spectrum can focus more so than everyone else. The hearing music in his head could have been obsessive compulsive issues along with the seziure and the complaints about migraines tells us he had a lot going in his little head.

I TOTALLY agree with you, Laura...I even brought that article up on the thread that purplerabbithole posted a few months in regards to this same subject..OMG, the backlash...I was just trying to understand and look at all posibilities in regards to how a genius operates, nothing more, nothing less...I wasn't implying that P was "on the spectrum", but did take into account the fact that he had seizures as a child, the seizures "went away" after an angel cured him (his words), then at that exact time (age 7?) is when the compulsion for music began...I was trying to tie in whether or not there was a link between the seizures ceasing and the music compulsion beginning. I'm just analytical that way..

Wow--cool read--thanks for posting, LauraR! This was a pretty amazing interview, as candid and plainly stated as it was: Prince fooled around with music as a child, at a critical point in early adulthood wielded it as a necessary survival tool, and upon his basic industry mastery by the third album, became fully turned-on to stagecraft and shaping his musicianship into an artistic enterprise. I wonder what proportion of musicians follow such a progression in their music career, as people approach the craft from different angles. When he commented about the behavior of his first post-solo band, I wonder if he may have been projecting about himself, instead! It's amazing to learn from the conversation the achievements he realized through his own drive, and to see what was the core of his motivation in his own words.

Actually he said his mother told him an angel told her he was cured. Which is just a mon trying to comfort a scared child nowhere near the big deal people on this board it out to be. I think all this stuff ties together and you can be on the low end of Autusim spectrum we are only now finding out a lot about this stuff in the last few years. It makes it even better that he used what might be considered weakness to accomplish his goals.

I would love to hear from people who experience the phenomenon of hearing music. Last fall I saw an interview on "Charlie Rose", an interview show on pbs here in the states, with a musician who experienced this. I don't remember the name of the musician but he said that he always traveled with a skateboard because the only time that he didn't hear music is when he was on his skateboard. I don't believe that this man had any form of autism.

--😋I never heard anyone but Prince say he heard music all the time in his head. You know there are people with Autism and Asperger that are highly functioning it is a just a theory but I keep thinking about what Sheila E said about him not being able to be still.

Laura, thank you!!! This interview is the most extraordinary I've read. I almost can't believe it exists! We are so lucky to have this. So open, so real. I learnt so much about his early life in this one interview- incredible how much he shared here. This is a precious gift and I'm so grateful you shared it with us. I read the interview was done march 1983, published sept. So-he was just on the brink of filming purple rain and all that major fame to follow. wow.

Great post! I've seen/read little excerpts from that piece in many places before, but I'd never read the whole interview until now. The second, shorter interview at the end was also good. His comments at the end about butting heads with engineers is really interesting, since he was about to meet Susan, who'd then be with him for years.
Keep your headphones on.
