Question: I've read this article before, so it brings it up again. P stated that his father would dream music and get up at 4 a.m. and the music would just flow through him, that it was no work....then P stated he did the same thing. We all know that Prince WAS music. He even called it a "curse" at times, because what he would hear in his head wouldn't let him sleep until he "got it out". Another person who stated he experienced this was Miles Davis. In an interview before he died, he said he could even hear music at a basketball game, and tried to explain to the interviewer how it sounded when the sneakers would come trampling down the court...cricket,cricket is basically what you heard from the interviewer. Question being...in the minds of the greats, is this the way life is for them? Is this their "normal"...to hear music constantly, and until they "get it out", they can't rest? I found this parallel interesting.

The hearing music in his head could have been obsessive compulsive issues along with the seziure and the complaints about migraines tells us he had a lot going in his little head.

I TOTALLY agree with you, Laura...I even brought that article up on the thread that purplerabbithole posted a few months in regards to this same subject..OMG, the backlash...I was just trying to understand and look at all posibilities in regards to how a genius operates, nothing more, nothing less...I wasn't implying that P was "on the spectrum", but did take into account the fact that he had seizures as a child, the seizures "went away" after an angel cured him (his words), then at that exact time (age 7?) is when the compulsion for music began...I was trying to tie in whether or not there was a link between the seizures ceasing and the music compulsion beginning. I'm just analytical that way..

Wow--cool read--thanks for posting, LauraR! This was a pretty amazing interview, as candid and plainly stated as it was: Prince fooled around with music as a child, at a critical point in early adulthood wielded it as a necessary survival tool, and upon his basic industry mastery by the third album, became fully turned-on to stagecraft and shaping his musicianship into an artistic enterprise. I wonder what proportion of musicians follow such a progression in their music career, as people approach the craft from different angles. When he commented about the behavior of his first post-solo band, I wonder if he may have been projecting about himself, instead! It's amazing to learn from the conversation the achievements he realized through his own drive, and to see what was the core of his motivation in his own words.

I learnt so much about his early life in this one interview- incredible how much he shared here. This is a precious gift and I'm so grateful you shared it with us. I read the interview was done march 1983, published sept. So-he was just on the brink of filming purple rain and all that major fame to follow. wow.
