Why do 'modern' artists down-play P influences? I mean, Beck harped on about Sly influences on his last CD but seemed uncomfortable talking about the clear presence of Prince sounds. The Charlatans (UK) cited Curtis Mayfield constantly on their last album (Wonderland) yet the media concentrated on the P comparisons. What the f..., are they just embarresed?
Saying that, I have found that when somebody is really into an artist, they hear their influences everywhere. Christ ten years ago I thought every band in the world was influenced by Cheap Trick!

Prince gets alot of Props mainly for His 80's Output,Creativity&Also His Live SHows.alot of folks dig Prince, but it's cool to hear Beck Mentioning Sly Stone because now there is someone who truly is over-due for More Acknowledgement IMHO. mistermaxxx

I'm pretty sure Beck has given Prince his props in the past. Jay Z wants to work with Prince, Alicia Keys is always gushing about Prince. Justin Timberlake says he's jealous of Prince's falsetto.

I haven't found this to be the case at all. These days there are more artists citing Prince as an influence than ever before. At least on this side of the pond. The Beck example you gave you said was about his last album. Beck has previously stated in no uncertain terms that Prince is a big influence on him. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Why is it even important? Artists should be respected for what THEY are doing and not for WHO they are INFLUENCED BY. I don't buy D'Angelo's CDs for the "Prince influence", I buy them because I like the songs D writes. That's what its all about.

I bought Dangelos first album purely because the review said the record sounded part influenced by Prince. Glad I did.
