lazy "narrative" writers who write reviews of Prince's work (Gold Experience and Black Album forgettable?--WTF)

Some dude for MTV just wrote about how underrated the Symbol album was. That's fine. Its not my favorite but cool. However, he literally dismissed the Gold Experience, the Black Album and Chaos and DIsorder as throwaway albums that were mostly forgettable. Now, there could be an argument made for Chaos and DIsorder being a throwaway (it was quickly made and rough around the edges.) But not many people in the know-how would call the other two albums forgettable unless they are just buying into the narrative that Prince's albums that didn't get Warners Brother support were tossed aside due to lack of quality. Oh, and that's right--those three albums are not on spotify. I bet the dude didn't even bother listening to those albums or looking into the history of the Black Album. Forgettable?--when his last hit single was TMBGITW from the Gold Experience and the Black Album being the most bootlegged album in history?

For God's sake, Prince's music needs to be much more available from all the years, other wise writing like this will keep happening. Even if it means his lesser work is exposed, it would still be important for writers to have all the information easily available because damn, writers can be lazy.

Availability isnt an issue. People will always write bullshit opinions. Even here last week someone said the Symbol album was better than 50% of his 80's output. And they HAVE and heard the full material.

I am not saying the dude isn't entitled to his opinion. He can dislike all three albums if he wants, but forgettable and throwaway--that makes no sense. There is more energy and egde in the Gold Experience than many of his albums and it was well reviewed (even if you hate the song I hate U, it would be ridiculous to call it a forgettable song [unless of course, you have never heard it]) and Gold Experience also had a hit song. And the Black Album was legendary. No this dude read about the lack of promotion and distribution for all three albums and noticed they weren't on Spotify. I am 90% sure that is why he said that shit.

I added more to what I wrote..Please read the edited post again. My point was that it was an uninformed opinion. There is nothing forgettable about a song about hating his lover (and not sparing the rod) or a song in which the word "bitch' is shouted 40 times at least or a sexy slow jam with a powerhouse drum/guitar opening or a quirky song about Dolphins or a sex jam [319] that was featured in the sleaziest soft porn b-film ever, Showgirls.

Many would disagree with me, but I placed “The Black Album” at No.1 in my list of favourite Prince albums in a recent thread.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of TGE, but it’s absurd to call it a throwaway album. Prince obviously put a great deal of effort into it and saw it as a pivotal release. We should allow for differing opinions but yes, many music “journalists” simply spew rubbish. You just have to learn to live with it.

I stumbled across an article recently that dimissed Betty Davis as overrated and claimed that her music and vocal performances were bland. It infuriated me at the time, but life is too short.

Seriously though... bland?

Both albums were shelved by Prince. Perhaps the "lazy" writers' takes are impacted by that . . . especially with TGE, maybe the peak of the oft-maligned Symbol Era.

Arguably, the early part of that era ('93-'95) produced some great music, and one of his last standout albums, but it's easy to lose sight of that for the casual writer in all of the symbol and "slave"-scrawling drama.

Not disagreeing. But if someone doesn't know the score, they should admit that what they may not know rather than make generalizations and assumptions. They should admit that there were extenuating circumstances.
