Prince was not a nice person but a genius. Let's accept that and appeciate the music

Generally ppl are sayin Prince wasn't a nice person. Abusive to his wives, friends, bandmates and family (a brother actually died of poverty).

Whilst there is no denying his genius-which is why I joined this site-Prince was actually to all accounts an asshole.

That said he did create amazing escapism, music and is for me a true icon.

I think Prince was the greatest musical star of our time.

That said as a man and if he wasn't an adored idol...he would have been considered an asshole, mysoginist and abusive. Immature and out of touch.

But we all have our faults.

I feel the whole Prince legacy is becoming life the argument that ensued on whether christ was divine or a messenger.

I like to remember the musician..the man seems like he was a dick. Sorry, but a lot of hardcore fans like myself are reading Mayte's book and its like finding out James Brown was a wife beater

I think it would be more fair to say Prince was a flawed human being, like all of us, than to overgeneralize and say "he was not a nice person." Because of his incredible talent, he had the means by which to act out on his every whim. That meant being cruel at times but also incredibly generous at times.

There's no excuse for a lot of behavior in the world beyond the fact that we all make mistakes. Prince's mistakes and his kindness were magnified because of his wealth and talent. Yes, he hurt people, but he helped people, too.

It's his imperfection as a person that make him interesting as an artist, as sad as it is that he did hurt people throughout his life.

Without exception, if we're looking for perfection in our musical idols, we're going to be disappointed. Same goes for any role that a human being might possibly fill.

There is no doubt that Prince certainly seemed to act like an asshole on many occasions. However, I think it is overly simplistic to label him as one. He was a complex man who was changing all the time, much like his music. I imagine he was at his worst in his primary relationships like so many people are. He was way too insecure in this area (not insecure in getting women sexually but a woman having to do so much to show him that she really loved him). If accounts of his upbringing are even remotely true, he would have had difficulty in forming secure primary attachments. I would also have hated to be a band member when he decided to move into another musical direction. Nevertheless, it is interesting that so many of the women and band members in his life still apparently feel some connection to him, at least in recent years. If he was just an asshole in these areas, I doubt that this would be so. Even back when he was supposed to be at his worst with band members such as when the extreme success of Purple Rain reportedly was going to his head (Purple Reign), "nice Prince" was still evident but no longer predominant. Interestingly, the newly available Purple Rain sound-checks were noteworthy about how gentle he was in giving directions to the band and in no way did he sound like a prima donna. Perhaps the biggest reason why Prince doesn't deserve the genius but an asshole epitaph is that there are so many accounts of him being warm and supportive to others in recent years. His demeanor on stage also seemed to reflect this, especially during the Piano and Mic shows.

I don't believe that you can completely seperate teh man from the artistry. If his music is at all believable, then he knows and understands (and can feel) what love and compassion are.

"Abusive" is not a word people should throw around lightly, since usually it indicates "Physical abuse".

Also, those still thinking that Mayte was honoring Prince, are you seeing this thread?

Yet so many exbandmates, employees, girlfriends, friends, have expressed what a wonderful man he was, minus one disgruntled exwife whom he hadn't spoken to in 17 years. Everyone has a-hole moments, Prince's was just made public by some seeking fame and fortune. There are too many people who knew him then and now vouching for his character to say that he was not a good person. I choose to believe them.
