It's about four minutes and fifteen seconds... batting eyes

.

This was my least favorite track on 'Batman' back in the day, skipped it all the time. But now I love it.

.

Below is an interesting read for a semi-comic take on the entire album, including "Lemon Crush." I HIGHLY recommend reading it!

There is the (myth?) story about an interview with Don McLean's song "American Pie."

He was asked what it was about and he said "about 8 minutes" and the reporter followed up with "No, what does it mean?" and he said "It means I never have to work...."

Too true! Good for him, still working the casino circuit on the strength of that one.

I don't think it's too hard to figure out. First, I'm dismissing the "bitter sweet" reference in the other thread. Lemon isn't bitter, it's tart. That's different. Crush can be anything, and it's certainly not sweet by default. You can crush garlic - doesn't make it taste like a Jolly Rancher.

The lyric says:

Nay, I can't resist thee - lemon crush
Every time U do me - such a rush
Ooh, it goes right through me - lemon crush

All it takes, a little bitty
Of your, ooh - pretty, pretty
I'm the wildest in the city
Ooh - pretty, pretty one!
Come on, come on
I'm ready 4 the crush

If I'm workin' at my jobba

I'm the victim, U're the robba
No matter how much I try 2 stoppa
I can't help thinkin' about cha
Lemon crush - I'm ready 4 the crush

It's all a euphemism for sex. "All it takes is a little bit of your ...ohhh, pretty pretty". It's confirmed with "every time you do me, such a rush".

Oddly, the song is from the point of view of Vicki Vale, not Batman or Bruce Wayne or The Joker. She is the only one with a real job, per se. She spends a lot of time digging into Bruce's past at some point. She's there to study the story of the Batman, yet her time & thoughts are robbed by her affair with Bruce. (Or is it vice versa?)

I'm not sure - as a guy - I'd want anyone referring to my dick as "little bitty", but hey - lyrics! lol

It's interesting because it's another moment when Prince writes the women being in charge, and pursuing him, instead of the reverse. We see this theme throughout his music. While a couple of songs were a little rapey, most of them have the woman dominating him, and she's in control. He's in submission to her in some regard, either emotionally, or sexually.

Sadly this one didn't make it into the movie..

I remember being sooo disppointed with how little they featured his songs in the movie. Made me dislike the film for a long time.

It's not a favorite for me. And no it doesn't appear in the movie. Much of the music is "inspired by". Subsequent Batman soundtracks have had the same blueprint on their soundtracks.

For anyone:

  • The Future
  • Electric Chair
  • Partyman
  • Trust
  • Scandalous

are in the movie. Although, I swear it was once discussed that a snip of "Lemon Crush" was in the movie somewhere. I can't find it.

There's also another version of "Lemon Crush", longer, on a March 1989 configuration of the soundtrack (from Princevault).

It stands to note, about the soundtrack, that Peter Gruber originally had the idea of Prince doing the funk songs, and Michael Jackson doing the love songs for the soundtrack. Elfman would then take elements of both artist's songs for the score. That idea was abandoned early on.

I never got why people hate Batman so much. If anything, it shows Prince can record an album with pop-friendly songs when given the task. (This was also evident on albums like Diamonds & Pearls, The Gold Experience, Musicology.) It's also a very transitional album to me, sorta like how Controversy tends to be. But it's not a bad record, by any means.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The extended instrumental portion of Vicki Waiting (not on the album) is in the background of the party scene at Wayne Manor, too.

when Spin magazine reviewed the Batman album, they mentioned that this song is basically about orgasm lol so if a "lemon crush" is an orgasm, this is what the song is saying....

everytime you kiss me (I have an orgasm)

nay I can't resist thee (I have an orgasm)

everytime you do me,such a rush

ooh it goes right through me (I have an orgasm)

lol

It's a soda. He is expressing how she makes him feel. It is like the rush people get from a soda like Moutain Dew for example, with all the caffeine and sugar. This from a man who drank a gallon of coffee a day and got B12 injections before he hit the stage -his tour rider always included a doctor. That's how he was able to have so much "energy."

remember, this song is written from the viewpoint of a woman (Vicki Vale) so I don't think it could be about a "rush" that Prince feels when he sees a woman, lol
