What's Your Playlist for Prince Newbie's?

After lots of time away from the catalog--I'm having an amazing time on Spotify digging in deep. My wife said to me--so, you're just going to be playing Prince all the time now, huh? Yep!

A buddy of mine (33 year old) who's not an original fan asked me to make a playlist for him. I put a mix together--with not too many hits as most people know those.

Here's my chronological list below. 1 hr and 24 mins. I think it's a good intro! I'm curious as to what your 'mostly-non-hit-oriented' playlist for newbie's might look like. Please share!

This is sort of impossible to answer without knowing what other music the person listens to.

It's always easier to introduce someone to a new (to them) artist if the music is similar to something they already like. After they've heard that – and with any luck, liked it – then you can move on to something that might be a little more "challenging."

I've always said that I could make a Prince mix for anyone - no matter what kind of music they like.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You are so right. I could have made a dance mix. A ballads mix. A rock mix. A funk mix. etc. etc. I tried to cover a lot of different bases in my mix.

Gives a good insight to the rocker/funkster/balladeer/prodigy that he was, without choosing big hits that the average person would know.

Still discovering his 90s material so I can't have any say on that.

Couldn't answer that as others have said it depends on what the person likes.

I certainly wouldn't include any of the pop hits they've listened to a million times. And which do not not really touch on Prince as an artist.

I would say to have them explore on their own.

3. When You Were Mine

5. 1999 (7" edit)

8. I Would Die 4 U (7" edit)
9. Raspberry Beret

11. Purple Rain

Short, succinct, and nothing too offensively non-pop song for even the lamest of tastes.

I think that I doesn't hurt have some of the big hits in the list.

The Newbies know which songs they have heard, and they can remove them from the list themselves if they have already heard them.

I'd like to add the following song to my list

Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance

Dear Mr. Man

Underneath The Cream

Sexmesexmenot

Vavoom
High

S & M Grove

Daisy Chain

Fury

The Word

Crimson And Clover (cover)

Colonized Mind (ripoff)

(There'll Never B) Another Like Me

Dance 4 Me

Valentina

Breakfast Can Wait

1,000 O's & X's

Unreleased Prince Songs

You're In My System 84 Groove

Irrisistible Bitch

Do Yourself a Favor
Extralovable

Lust U Always

We Can Funk (1983 version)

As others said, it depends on the person. I've put a few of my friends on to Prince. They knew almost nothing about him except Dave chapelle and Purple Rain (although my generation generally respects P as an American icon & legend regardless). What really resonated with my friends (who mostly fuck with contemp R&B and alternative hip hop) was P from the 90s. Light up a few spliffs and play Joy in Repetition, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, Days of Wild, maybe even a little bit of Bob George and Superfunky, 7, Sexy MF, Good Life, Space, The Flow, and of course some 80s gems like Something in the Water, 17 Days, and the original OF4S.

"Wow bro I thought Prince had only guitar music and shit. His music's trippy!"

Exactly. Prince is not one thing. Prince is so different in even in its own eras.
I personally think these type of "lists" will turn people off to Prince than vice versa.

And doubly so any list originating from prince.org.

Well,

I think that you are wrong about that.

I have already turned on two people to Prince, who were only aware of his big hits and the albums 1999, Purple Rain, Parade and SOTT.

Well..

I actually think if playlists are created and curated into the different types of music, that would be more effective and educational. I think if any artist needed curated lists is Prince.

The Beatles have a lot of different curated lists on the different types of Beatles music, but Prince more than almost anyone, has some of the most far ranging sounds. From the soft jazzy stuff, the pop, the R&B, the funk, rock, psychedelic, ballads, the electronic, the acoustic, the experimental, live, the side acts, the music for others, the hodgepodge homogenous stuff, the quirky, on and on.

I'm sure someone has already created curated lists like that on Spotify for him by now, so for a newbie, I think I would just say to them to just explore and let them know how vast his breadth as an artist is beforehand so they know what to expect and not pigeonhole him. Send them to the more stylistically curated lists than to simplify him into his pop hits.

I think those top hits list only marginilizes him and turns a bigger audience away.

Hey! I really appreciate what everyone has shared! There's definitely some overlap with my original list and some cool variations. Some deep songs! I look forward to the day when I can catch up with the post-1995 work which I don't know as well. So much more Prince to discover! (Both released and yet-to-be-released)

As a bit of an addendum here this review of the re-release of ChangesoneBowie is worth a read.

http://pitchfork.com/revi...sonebowie/

It strikes me that there's no similar Prince release (possibly in 2017 it's not possible for such a release to happen). The Very Best Of is as close as you can get but that's covering a much longer time period and several massive career changes.

With the above I tried to put together a similar set to the bowie one that was riff and pop hit heavy while roughly telling the (much abridged) story. Many massive hits are missing but that's ok (Let's go Crazy I left off because I find that it only works at the start or end of an album.)

When I make a playlist for friends of an artist I think they might be like they usually can't handle more than a short albums worth of material before they start tuning out. 30 or so tracks of Prince brilliance is just too much for them to begin with.

Agreed! The best way to insure a (focused) playlist doesn't get listened to is to put 30+ songs on it. To get your playlist listened to--it must be concise and focused or folks will feel overwhelmed.

One exception is if you're making a playlist intended to be played on Shuffle mode--like curated radio. You needs hours of music to make those work. (I love Shuffle lists for car rides, etc!)

I remember taking stacks of CDs (and before that records and tapes) in order to make someone a playlist. Now we can put one together and share it in minutes. Ah, modern technology...
