Camille trax with a Prince voice

Ok. I just listened to the complete Camille album with a real Prince voice....! Where do these trax come from all of a sudden?

I'm sorry. What do you mean: fan-made? I'm hearing a Prince voice on all Camille trax. Never heard them before.

I mean that someone simply took the tracks from Camille and ran them through audio editing software, keeping the tempo of the original songs but changing their pitch so the vocal tracks sound like Prince's normal singing voice.

Those are not tracks from Prince's own recordings. They're altered and circulated by fans.

Interesting to listen to, but it's important to realize that you haven't stumbled upon something special from the vault.

^ See, that's what I mean when I say DO NOT share fanmade edits online. For one Cinnamonboy who has the sense to come here and ask about it, how many people won't, and will keep listening to those things believing they're listening to a genuine Prince recording?

I didn't know about it, OK. As I'm sure many others don't know either. It was just a question. Can I not pose a ? here? Do YOU know everything?
Btw, I am not sharing any edits here, just asking a ? That's all.

Have you lost your senses or isn't English your first language or what?

I was actually praising you for having the sense to come here and get information, while others won't bother, and I've never accused you of sharing anything, you were the victim here not the culprit.

I expect an apology.

Someone had slowed down IIWYG once to his pitch, but then the song was slowed down and shitty. I've not heard anything else beyond that, and not sure I'd want to. Besides, if they literally slowed this tape down or sped that vocal up in the studio, there is no real vocal unaltered vocal at the pitch & key we know it anyway.

Of course these days they could easily just sped up his vocal to match time & keep the pitch intact too. But no one here has those master tapes to mess with so it's moot.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You have to be seriously deranged or a troll to attack and insult people who pay you compliments and hadn't told you a single unpleasant thing in the first place. I hope life brings you all you want too, but if you attack people who are being nice to you all the time, it's gonna be a lonely existence. Good luck and goodbye.

You seem to have things completely backwards there was certainly nothing bad said against you by databank.

This is an impossible task. There are also outtakes that are tampered with on bootlegs that aren't representative of the real recording but everyone (including me) kept listening to those believing they were genuine. Moonbeam Levels for example, the very first time I heard this was on a bootleg LP which was speeded up and I always assumed that was the right speed. Only years later on the Dreams bootleg I heard the slower, normal version.

Maybe it's all in the grammar and how it is written.

I read databank's response and there was no animosity in it at all BUT I did have to re-read it again as at first fleeting glance it did have the potential of souding anti.

Yes, one needn't have a studio or expensive equipment to make such changes to existing tracks. Free software like Audacity can do this in a couple clicks, keeping the tempo of the tracks the same so they do not sound slowed down, but altering the pitch so sped up vocals like Camille's sound more normal. If you compare the original Camille tracks to the ones you posted about, you can tell that something is not quite right about them. They almost sound like they're in a different key (which is basically true).

If you will remove emotion from the equation and read databank's post again, he was simply stating what he has said on this forum numerous times: if someone wants to make a fan-made compilation or alteration, they should keep it to themselves and not post it online as it can be mistaken for a real outtake and further muddy the already blurry history of Prince recordings. He was complimenting you for having the sense to ask about it here before spreading it further as truth without confirmation. databank is an excellent member who continues to post level-headed responses and confirmed facts. I think you misinterpreted what he posted.

You are quite right. Now that I am re-reading it again, I see what you all mean. I am quite sorry about this, Databank. I have gotten your post misinterpreted. I read it as a cynical post I suppose. I hope next time we can communicate a bit easier and not right from the top of the tree, being all offended and all.
Hahaha, I always thought people pose their question here first @ the org. before assuming that they're listening to original Vault-stuff. But I guess that's not true then.
To get back to the original post: I never heard the Camille tracks this way so I was genuinly surprised to hear them with a normal Prince voice. I never suspected them to actually be from the Vault or whatever, but I was surprised that they showed up all of a sudden. What with the album (original LP 1986) being sold recently and all. But I was still thinking: if there were any 'original voice'-versions, they don't show up 30 years later.

I haven’t heard these tracks, but this is probably an example of FFT techniques. It basically allows you to analyse time and frequency data and re-synthesise it, changing pitch but not speed or vice versa. As you say, Audacity can do this (there’s loads of free software out there), but most would result in changing the pitch of the audio as a whole, including the instruments. More advance software like Melodyne will allow you to separate material in different frequency ranges, so it may or may not be possible to isolate the vocals and re-pitch those alone, but it’ll probably always sound imperfect and “off” when using complex source material.

I agree with Databank’s stance here. I don’t have so much of an issue with fan-made compilations, but altering the actual audio to this extent is a terrible idea.

I believe what the OP found and listened to circulated about a year and a half ago as a bootleg named "Uncamille."

It was discussed on the org briefly here:

http://prince.org/msg/7/420011

and also buried in this thread:
